We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Itzy Martinez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Itzy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I have been dancing since I’m 12 years old and I started teaching when I was 14, being paid at such a young age doing what I love the most, was just the beginning of discovering how unstoppable you can be when you trust on your passion, in your gift, of course it’s been a long process of learning the value of my job/how much my job costs, I always think since is not something tangible is even harder to learn how to charge it properly or calculate. Don’t be afraid to charge for your service, it is not just the time of the show or the class, it’s all the hard work and preparation that is behind it.
Itzy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Let me introduce myself, my name is Itzy Martínez, I’m from Guadalajara, Mx, I have been living in LA for the last 5 years and I am a professional dancer, I have been dancing for 16 years and now I’m starting my clothing brand called It’z iconic, I have been passionate about fashion since I have memory and finally it’s the time to developed this passion.
My brand is focused on recreating and refreshing the sports clothes making garments very unique and special that you can wear in any occasion making you feel as an icon.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Honestly just to talk and express through my creativity allowing it to come out and help people to feel identified and empowered as well.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing my creations becoming in something real, seeing all the process and how from a piece of fabric you can create a whole piece of art or how from just an idea you can create a crazy choreography, also I love surprising myself realizing how capable I am to do anything that is in my mind
