We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Itzel Oregon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Itzel , thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I was invited to work on sofia coppola movie. I was terrified because i was intimidated by only the idea of working for her on the movie “On The Rocks” for mexico scenes. I thought i wasnt prepared for that amazing oportunity but i decided not to listen to my thoughts and just go for it. At the end everything went amazing. She and the makeup head department were both happy with my work . So, i learned my lesson, just go for it. Trust youself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I decides to become a makeup artist since i finished high school. I started working on a departamento store selling smashboxs products. I decided to write through fb all the famous mexican makeup artists and fxs and así if i could work with them. The most famousr one was the only one Who wrote me back letting me know i had to improcedente my technique. That i should keep practicing. 4 months laters he wrote me that he needed a couple of extra hands. So i agree to help him for free at a tv show. And 3 months laters he decided to hire me. And thats how i started working in the tv and movie industry
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I would have love to know more about psychology. I think that as a makeup artist is almost as important as the tecnique to know how to communicate, understand other peoples mind, traumas,. Etc. Knowing how to read people is one of the most important things i had to learn by the Hard way. But it should be part of the makeup artist education
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I try to unlearn the techniques i learned at the makeup school and try to learn new techniques every day. The products and the techniques keep changing and improving so i try to just Learn from other makeup artist or other people ideas. I like experimenting with products
