Alright, Issac thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
Playing in 3 bands was the last thing I saw myself doing two years ago from today. My first 2 1/2 years of high school consisted of sports and nothing to do with music. It wasn’t until December 2020 when I gave music a shot. I joined a rock band called, Rocky Mountain Oysters with a group of life long friends going on 11 years, Mason Cichon, Blake Smith, and Zack Collins. When i first joined, I had never played an instrument consistently and neither had Zack at the time. Hours and hours and HOURS of practice finally got us to the point where we can start playing shows in front of a live crowd. As a band, our earliest influences came from the grunge and punk scene. Bands like Nirvana, AIC, Rise Against and Nofx. Learning to play punk first is something I am very happy I did because it taught me to play fast right away.Ever since, we have consistently been playing shows, and consistently getting better at adapting to the show environment as a whole. I have personally gone on to joining two other bands in, Interpretive Tyranny, and a project brutal hardcore band, Polish. For me personally, my experiences have been life-changing, in the fact that I’ve met lifelong friends and got to experience things that not everybody gets to experience. I am beyond grateful for everybody who has supported me and the projects I’m involved in and we are looking forward to releasing more content and love contributing to the beautiful scene in Denver.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is issac roybal, I am 17 years old and I am a musician from Denver, Co /Madison, WI. The alternative music scene is something I have supported and loved from a young age. I always used heavy alternative music as a resource for anger I may had been holding onto, or just a mental escape from from the world. The Hardcore punk scene is the community where I really feel accepted and welcomed, the venue Seventh Circle was the first glimps of hardcore I had ever witnessed and from there sparked a love for the feeling, community, message and overall positivity of everyone involved. My earliest inspirations come from my sisters. Growing up, I was the youngest and I was the only boy in the family. So everything my sisters thought were cool.. of course, I also did.. Daisy and Jessica exposed me to my first tastes in music. Daisy was a One Direction fanatic which led me to love the 1D, and Jessica was the first person to show the alternative side of music, bands such as Paramore, Blink-182, and plenty of others. My personal overall goal with music is to create music projects from pulling inspirations from some of my favorite artist and experimenting with different genres along the way. Some of my biggest influences right now are Scalp (WCDV), Harry Styles, Gulch, and a Lo-fi artist – Jazzinuf. I’m looking forward to creating all different sounds. Genres such as Hardcore punk, pop, lo-fi, and alternative rock. I’m looking forward to keep creating music I love based off of my favorite music tastes.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Summer of 2011 is when I first met my best friends in the Rocky Mountain Oysters. I remember my dad telling me to go out and play with the older kids when they were throwing a football around. And ever since then they took me under their wing and I’ve been a part of their friend group/Brotherhood ever since.
