We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ismail Bronson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ismail, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
The best investment you can make in filmmaking is classes and books. I am slowly building a library of books in filmmaking. The most essential skills you can learn from this work is networking. I think the biggest one everyone skips over is it’s not about who you know, or who knows you. It’s about who believes in what you’re saying and if you’ll actually pull through.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Isma’il Bronson an African American director, born silver spring MD, artistically raised in Baltimore MD. I am a fighter and believer in African American story telling in different genres. It’s what I fight for. You can see my work THE COBBLERS WIFE and what will push us in a different direction. I’m just getting started. You can find me Threehundredonemotionpictures.com that’s where I am setting up and ready to push us to a new space in creative narrative storytelling.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Currently my goal is to make the second film. I think the second one will be trickiest one in my career. The reason I have to find out how to do it again, but bigger. Almost 100x bigger than my first film. Finding the resources needed will be a journey, but I am willing to fight for it.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think the pivot was after I got an audition from my agent I thought was strange. I didn’t like what the black character was doing. He was more of a joke/ gag than anything. I have studied Practical Aesthetics, months of driving acting techniques. If they weren’t going to take me serious then they will take me serious when I make my film.
