We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ismael Pohlert. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ismael below.
Ismael, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
Most recently, I have had the privilege of working with MiraCosta College and their students. I have worked closely with the UPRISE program, which provides resources for undocumented students. I have also worked closely with the Transitions Scholars program, which provides nurturing support to formerly incarcerated students. Being able to work with underserved students and hear their stories, has allowed me to remain on my life’s path and make a positive impact in my community. I love creating informational videos for MiraCosta College because these videos are helping students make important life decisions, raising awareness of the resources available to them, and shining a light on under represented communities of students.

Ismael, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my marketing business in September 2019. Since then, I have managed 15+ clients websites, 10+ clients social media handles, and created 100+ videos. I love working with small businesses and community colleges because I specialize in creating a brand image that is meaningful and tells a story. I have designed websites for lawyers, artists, photographers, and more. I offer a variety of services ranging from website design, videography, photography, and social media management. The biggest problem that I solve for clients is establishing an online presence that allows their business to be found on the first page of google. What sets me apart from other businesses is that it is only me. I am here for you at all times and I am willing to work with you step-by-step to make your dreams come to life. I am dedicated to my craft and I always appreciate providing ideas and expertise to my clients who might need help creating a clear image of what they need for their business. I am most proud of my clients for taking a leap of faith and trusting me to build their brand. It takes courage to put your business online and I love that my clients entrusted me to help them do so.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the number of unique, resilient, and humble individuals that I have had the pleasure of meeting. I love hearing the stories of my clients and the individuals associated with the projects I am working on. I am always humbled by the life experiences of others and hearing their respective goals in life. It is so important to give a voice to those who may have never had one. Oftentimes, the content I create is not meant for the client or myself. The content I create is to serve under represented populations, to bring awareness to this community, and to enact change within the community and beyond.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I funded my business by working in a shoe warehouse and bussing tables. I would save almost all of my paycheck to help fund my business. I first filed my business license and then began to buy software associated with social media management. After shifting business practices to content creation, I began to buy a new laptop, new camera, and new editing software. After a year and a half, I was returning profit and able to fund my business through my revenue.
