We were lucky to catch up with Isis Spann recently and have shared our conversation below.
Isis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I have learned that there is no reward without taking a risk. We often wonder “what if” and think of all of the negative things, but what if we took that same energy and wondered “what if” but in a positive light? When I decided not to return to the classroom and open up my school, there was both a financial and emotional risk that I was taking. It would change my family dynamic and my day-to-day life tremendously. I would have to retrain my followers and supporters to see me as a business owner and not just a “teacher,” so I was also risking my reputation! Moving from the role of classroom teacher to business owner does have its challenges and moments of doubt, but I am happy with the results and the opportunities that I am getting because of the risk that I was (am) willing to take!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born to be a teacher and help children realize their true potential. My original plan after high school was to enlist in the U.S. Army, but as the only child, my mother’s fear weighed heavily on me, so I applied to one college, and when I got accepted, I took it as a sign to get a degree instead. Once in college, I continued to do all of the things I needed to do to enlist in the army, but I started working with children, and something came alive in me that still is awake in me today! During the summer of 2009, I interned with the Children’s Defense Fund, and my love for education grew even more. I knew I had to be a teacher. I spent twelve years teaching in public school classrooms, but in 201,9, after the birth of my son, I decided that I not only wanted to be a teacher but I wanted to be a principal and create a school for my son. I am proud that amid obstacles and hardship, I can follow my dreams and also not be tied to a dream of yesterday, but I can dream enough for my tomorrow and my children’s tomorrows as well.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Your friends today may not be your friends tomorrow, and your enemies today may not be your enemies tomorrow. I had to unlearn that the relationships that I have both business and professional will grow and change, and I cannot take it personally. When I first started in business, the need of my clients was mostly tutoring, and I had clients and organizations that needed those services. Then that need changed! Families needed a school environment, and I started a learning pod and then a micro-school, and now that need is changing as well. Although I used the terms “friend” and “enemy,” those can also be replaced with clients, families. customers. organizations, students, etc. I had to unlearn what I learned about business to pivot and be of service to those in need.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Simple. BE AUTHENTIC
Don’t become someone that you’re not for likes and followers. Choose a subject matter that you are passionate about and have had personal experience with! Social media puts in a position of influence and that should not be taken lightly.
