We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Isis Lazuli a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Isis , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Right now. I’m working on an EP! I released my first single back in September. I’ve been in school for audio engineering for a year now, and it’s helped me evolve my childhood passion. Making beats was always like my hidden talent, but I’m grateful to be able to pick it back up and take it seriously! Another project is my website! It took me a while to get it done, And I really beat myself up for it. But I sit back and realized it was all in divine timing. You can’t set unrealistic expectations for yourself. I had to be reasonable with my goals and my balance in life. It really showed me what it’s like to create a work flow that doesn’t create stress.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Isis Lazuli. I’m an artist, painter, singer-songwriter, and producer. My brand Lazuli Creationz is known for it’s mystical and thought provoking artwork and prints. I’ve since rebranded to Lazuli World, which offers prints, paintings, and clothing-featuring my favorite works, along with business logos, art commissions and now music. As of recently my most exciting projects are the release of my first single “backforth” and my new podcast “The Cosmic Voice” back in September. Writing and creating music has been a passion of mine since I was a child and I’m grateful to finally be able to share it with the world. Thanks to attending SAE Institute Atlanta in the last coming year, I’ve expanded my knowledge on music and what it means for me to be a creative in the music industry. I got into the art industry in high school. I was a fine arts kid and I was always encouraged to take it seriously but it wasn’t until I graduated in 2020. I realized that I’d rather make a living doing what I love than doing something for the sake of survival. I think what sets me apart from most artists is that I’m not in the music and art industry to make money. I want to evoke emotion, and build a community. Creating a space for people to speak freely about art and how it connects to them in their own lives. It’s always such a rewarding feeling to have works that not only help others discover who they are, but the reflection of their discoveries lead to my own self discovery.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Absolutely! I think the main thing is money. We live in a society where money is futile. It’s a necessity. But I have the innerstanding (not understanding) that it is not needed to make me fulfilled in life. I like to consider myself a right brain person. There are left and right brain people. Left brain people are more logical and analytic and right brain people are more creative and free flowing. I love to create and make things with my hands. When doing things like making music, creating art, up-cyling clothes, and even building a piece of furniture. I feel most like myself. So it’s more so about the creation and the connection to self that I experience when I’m in a creative space. The ability to turn nothing into something. To turn visions into reality. Emotions into colors-and sounds. And that is more rewarding than receiving money for my efforts. It is appreciated but it’s not what I’m after.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My current driving mission is self-discovery; that within learning and discovering more about myself, my life, it allows me open up to my emotions so i can create from a authentic space. Whether it be a sketch, a painting, or a new song. I am connected to these mediums as creative outlets because I’m connected with myself. And as a person on the road to self-discovery, I also know I’m not the only one on this journey. Theres a universe filed with people whose lives reflect your own, that is our ability to connect with one another. our connection with the universe. I feel like art captures that because you can find so many words to say staring at a piece art with no words. Because it connects with you in however you reflect it. Even in music, sometimes a song hits so hard, it’s on repeat for weeks. Cause those words hit you, they cut deep along with the beat and the other elements of the song. And music is a language that connects all kinds of people. So knowing that to connect with myself is to connect with others, that is my mission when I’m expressing myself creatively.
