We were lucky to catch up with Isiah Hall recently and have shared our conversation below.
Isiah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I can’t say when I first knew I wanted to be a poet but I remember when I first discovered the power of words. I was in sixth grade and was tasked to come up with poem about Black History Month. I wrote a poem about Rosa Parks. My teachers were pleasantly surprised with the words I chose and decided to have me recite my poem in front of the entire school at an assembly that was held. It was then, at that early age where I began to grasp the power of words and how it makes people react to them.
Isiah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I consider myself an artist who writes from the ingredients of his soul. As I mentioned, my first brush with poetry occurred in 6th grade. However, it was in 9th grade that my high school (East Side Community HS) offered a creative writing class where I learned the infrastructure of poetry – similes and metaphors, sonnets, haikus, learning how to speak in front of an audience, and writing our own book of poetry.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One goal in my creative journey is to publish my first book of poetry as an adult. This is something that I’ve been delayed on yet still inspired to complete. I want to use my voice or pen to communicate the matters of my heart and be a blessing to others in the process.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is to inspire and be inspired by other creatives. The beauty of vulnerability and the evidence of knowing that I’m perfecting my craft.
