We were lucky to catch up with Isha Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Isha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always been esoteric, and deeply connected to mystical things. My love of crystals, moon gazing with my father, and my mother’s affinity for plants and herbs have been the driving force behind Motown Mystic. As I become older and more in tune with my own spiritual journey, the inspiration behind Motown Mystic came to me. I made the decision to help Black folks, especially Black femmes tap into the innate magick that they carry and to explore healing exclusively for them and by them.
Due to the lack of Black spiritual shops in my area, I wanted to create a one stop shop for all of your spiritual, metaphysical, and holistic needs. Motown Mystic prioritizes educating & offering high vibrational alternative methods of healing through spiritual products and services.
We aspire to spread healing & high vibes with our products and education that will not only create a movement but will become a lifestyle.

Isha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been a Tarot Reader for about 6 years and an herbalist for 3 years. I specialize in traditional Hoodoo or Rootwork which is a spiritual belief system brought to the Americas by African slaves. The Conjuring tradition allowed slaves to defend themselves from harm, to cure their ailments, and to achieve some measure of control over their adversity. I carry the tradition on with pride and use many of the same spells & rituals that my ancestors used in their time. I am known for my tarot readings, but I also offer candle work, spiritual baths, crystal consultations, and other services to my clients that seek spiritual guidance. People come to me when they’re in need of anything from love spells to healing and energy work to personal protection. For me, Hoodoo means “making something out of nothing.” I use this magical practice for myself and my clients as a way to overcome obstacles and attempt to gain a desired outcome with the help of spirits and my Ancestors. I am most proud of the connections I have made and the results my clients have had from the work I’ve done with them. I’m also very proud that I get to carry this tradition down from my ancestors.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Even before the building of Motown Mystic as a business, I began building an online presence by openly sharing my spiritual journey and practices. I shared spells, tarot readings, sabbat celebrations, & general tips on spirituality. This allowed me to grow my audience and build credibility as a spiritual practitioner. Consistency and authenticity is key when running a healing centered business. In order to connect with people you have to reach them at the heart level. When I began posting consistently and more authentically, my followers not only increased, but so did my engagement. Social media has been the biggest tool in getting customers and clients.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Since my business focuses more on healing & spirituality, the resources that have been most impactful have not only helped me personally but as a entrepreneur as well. The two most impactful books that I’ve read has been “The Law of Divine Compensation: On Work, Money, and Miracles” by Marianne Williamson. This book reveals the spiritual principles that help us overcome financial stress and unleash the divine power of abundance within us. I used this book to reshape my thinking around money and scarcity mindset. It has encourage me to believe that I can have a successful business that makes six figures or more. The second book is “The 12 Week Year” by Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington. This book helped me breakdown the year into shorter time blocks, which has allowed me to accomplish more and measure the success of my business in a more tangible way.
