Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to ISANA SEBASTIAN. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
ISANA, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
What my parents did right was keep going when everyone told them they couldn’t. They became something bigger than what everyone thought they were. What my parents did right, was prove everyone wrong.
ISANA, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Isana Sebastian, I am 23 years old. I started IA GLAM when I was 20 years old in January 2020, pre-covid. I first got into makeup and beauty at a very young age. I’ve always loved makeup and changing my appearance which has ultimately gave me more self confidence. I feel like makeup just enhances our beauty even more and I always wanted to do that for other women and didn’t know how. In the year 2019, I was lost, confused, undriven, and unmotivated and ultimately dropped out of community college. With no plan to start a business I ended up writing down names I would potentially use for my business if I started one in the near future when school was done and my life was more established, not knowing I would have a business taking off in the months ahead. I randomly found an unexpected video on Youtube and started my business right then and there and researching night and day and then on January 24th, 2020 IA GLAM launched with only 5 lashes. Now we have more than 10 lash styles, lip products and more and even expanding to more soon. I soon ended up going back to school to become an Esthetician and that has helped me explore and adventure off into other businesses along the way!
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I am an ecommerce business and that comes with a lot of pros and cons. I wanted my business to be more personal. I wanted things to look my way, I wanted this business to show me, my personality and creativity. With other selling platforms its someone else’s website with my profile on it. I want customers to come to IA GLAM and to see me an the effort and thoughts I put into the website. One pro is you can customize your site to your liking and your customers can see your creativity. A con to owning an ecommerce would be other sites help you with sells and have there own algorithm. With your own website you have to create your own traffic and do your own marketing which can be difficult sometimes.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that my business journey was going to be the same as others. I was wrong. Everyone’s journey is no ones but their own. It’s your journey and nobody else’s and you have to the power to do what you want with your business.
