We were lucky to catch up with Isaiah Wallis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi ISAIAH, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned to make clothes by making clothes and studying clothes. I’m still learning because it’s not easy and there’s a lot you can do. I focused on reconstruction and textile decorations as the center of my garment production process so that’s one of the best ways to understand what I do. I wish I would have known what materials to use from the beginning because that’s one of the most important parts of my process. Developing washes for garments and designing style lines and silhouettes

ISAIAH, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started making clothes at the beginning of highschool for myself and that’s how I first got into what I do now. Finding a way to upcycle textile waste is what made me stay with my craft. I am a designer who makes 1 off garments.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Sales channels and rag houses are two important parts of my success as a creative that I wish I knew about earlier. Rag houses get you in contact with all kinds of vintage clothing. A big goal for my work is to help introduce textile waste back into the apparel industry through upcycling so getting better access to it is a goal I always have as a business. Understanding all the different ways to sell clothes after upcycling is what helps keep my business running so exploring different options when I sell is a big contribution to how I am able to still continue my practice.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of creating the garment I create is when people get to enjoy their clothes and receive compliments. I hope this encourages my clients to be themselves and be confident in being different from others.
