We recently connected with Isaiah Hageman and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Isaiah, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I have an interesting take on this question. As I just graduated college, I’m currently navigating decisions related to going full time as a coin dealer versus taking a “regular” day job in my degree of geology. Since both geology and numismatics are passions of mine, there is a constant struggle to choose one or the other to make a career out of. I currently am working to fulfill both dreams, also knowing that there will be a point in the future where I’ll have to make a choice.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a coin dealer, specializing in rare coins and currency, as well as bullion (gold, silver, etc) and some sports cards. I got started in numismatics when I was 13, and my love for coins exploded over the years. The COVID years pushed my business to new heights and I was able to sustain myself through the lockdown via sales on eBay and other platforms. Currently I both stock rare coins, and source material for clients.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve been on Instagram since 2015 – at that time, I can remember there were less than 10 of us showing coins and talking numismatics. Over the years, I’ve seen the number of people interested in coin collecting on social media explode and my account has become very popular with collectors.
For someone just starting to build a presence on social media, my advice is to just interact with people! Make friends and share what you know. You never know what might happen – I’ve been offered careers before from people that I originally met on social media.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There is one book and a couple podcasts I recommend. “A Guide Book to United States Coins” is the best book for someone new to start learning about coins. Podcast-wise, Coin Show Radio and The Coin Shop Podcast are two of the best audio platforms to listen in.
