We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Isaiah Bey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Isaiah below.
Isaiah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
What is “A New Dream?” It’s when your persistence and hard work meet each other to live the life you want to live. I started this clothing brand with my sister (Jade Syan) as an idea in 2020 and we officially launched in April 2022. Our goal is to provide substance and quality through timeless pieces with our collections.
A New Dream is meant for anybody who has faced any adversity and struggle. We aim to spread the awareness of true freedom, which is a life with no limitations. We look to empower others to always follow their dreams despite any hardships they may face.
As I write from experience, I understand that this isn’t the easiest. Especially when it seems like everything is going against you, but A New Dream is for those that are persistent enough along their journey to create the lifestyle they truly deserve.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Isaiah Bey, and I am a 22 year old entrepreneur from Louisville, KY. Growing up, it was never easy. I come from living in a three bedroom house with eight of us living in it and four of us sleeping in one room at one point, opening up ovens for heat every winter because we had none, and even being homeless once upon a time.. I’m just grateful to be in the position to share my upbringing to the ones who’ll read.
I was raised by my grandfather, grandmother, and father. My grandmother died when I was seven, and my father was always at work, so my grandfather was the one who truly took on the responsibility to raise not only me, but my brother and sister as well. There was a lot that we went through at an early age and to cope with it, I boxed. I started boxing at 14. and it was the first sport I was committed to. I never really played any sports growing up because we couldn’t afford it. I was given the opportunity to train for free, so I was grateful and hopped on it immediately. Whether I had to run, ride my bike, or take the bus, by any means I got to practice because boxing was my outlet. It was the only thing that can ever make me feel understood at the time.
As I was competing regionally and nationally throughout the years, there would be breaks in between I would take due to certain circumstances. My last couple fights, I remember battling myself mentally because deep down I knew I wanted to box, but at the same time I was in the beginning stages of starting my brand (A New Dream). I honestly wanted to do both, but couldn’t allow myself to. If I did, I would feel one foot in and one foot out. Whatever I’m doing, I want to give it my all so I can produce massive results. Now that I don’t compete anymore, I teach beginner classes for the youth within my community at Jeff City Boxing.
Even though it has only been a year since we’ve officially launched, A New Dream has accomplished a great amount of achievements. We’ve been able to build a great following around our city and the surrounding areas, multiple fashion shows, coming across influencers, and even doing a collaboration with Nike, Hibbett, and City Gear for Nike Air Maxx Month.
A lot of people ask how we were able to pull this off. My answer to that is branding. Your duty as the owner is not to just push your product or service within your business, but it’s also to push yourself. Everybody has something called a “personal brand,” and that’s just how you present yourself to the public eye. This means just as much as your product or service, maybe even more.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
As I get further along my journey, I’ve realized that I have been doing a lot of what others aren’t willing to do, and I feel like that’s helped me a lot. From educating myself on the ins and outs of running a business, to hustling out the trunk, literally. I’ve also made sure I push the meaning behind A New Dream more than anything else. I made sure my message was relatable. One thing we all share in common is struggle and trying to overcome it.
I feel like I’m known as “the guy with that one clothing line” around my city because wherever I’m at, I’m trying to push the brand. I stay with clothes in the trunk of my car. What I’ll do is go to parties, post up, and pop my trunk to try to make a sell. If they’re not willing to buy at the moment, its ok because I planted a seed by showing them what I have to offer as far as quality and substance behind the brand. They’ll follow me on either Instagram or Facebook, and I just rinse and repeat. I can be out there for hours sometimes, but its all apart of the grind, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
When it comes to funding my business, I like to go by a rule known as “OPM,” or using other people’s money. It wasn’t always like that starting out until I educated myself more on credit. At the beginning stages, everything was out of pocket. But as we began to grow and the demand got even greater, it wasn’t the easiest to keep up financially. I got offered a business credit card and was honestly scared to use it but started to realize, there’s good debt and bad debt. There’s not one wealthy person within this world who doesn’t have any debt. There just has to be a balance to where your debt doesn’t supersede your income.
Paying for everything out of pocket, I felt like I was working too hard. I’m young, and I’m still learning the game. The little I do know taught me that banks and institutions will literally give you thousands of dollars to fund your dreams. It’s a beautiful thing if you move correctly with it.
I always like to tell people, “you take their money to make your own money, pay them back, and then make some more money.” It’s a cycle.
