We were lucky to catch up with Isabelle Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Isabelle, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Cosplay is a community that enables me to pursue costume design, and gives me an opportunity to improve my craft. Every project I take on, I have a personal connection to the character, and I use their backstory and character design as inspiration.
Isabelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was introduced to cosplay at my first comic convention in 2014 Supercon. Immediately afterwards, I starting making my own cosplays, creating cosplay content, entering costume panels, and hosting cospay panels.
My brand Haute Cosplay is about bringing with a high fashion aesthetic to geek culture, while providing tips and tricks to help others improve the quality of their cosplays.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that not all engagement is good engagement. In a world that pushes the importance of pushing for greater reach and engagement, creators can lose sight of their purpose. In response they become a hamster on a wheel, churning out content that is inauthentic and/or doesn’t meet their initial purpose. This is how it is easy for a creator to burn out or dislike the content they once loved making.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main mission in my creative journey is to improve my skillset, and use that knowledge to remove any limitations in bringing my creative vision to fruition.
