We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Isabella Pizzano. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Isabella below.
Hi Isabella, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My interest in art began with my visits to NY City museums and artist studios. As my interest in art continued to grow, I decided to open a gallery in New Jersey in 1980. I ran my art gallery successfully for 17 years, focusing primarily on corporate clients. However, the gallery became somewhat restrictive for me as I was forced to focus on the business rather than the art.
I decided to sell my gallery around the same time my children began leaving for college. This created a new sense of tranquility in my home that afforded me the right atmosphere to begin experimenting with my own artistic creations. I began with clay sculpure, creating free-form shapes and wheel-thrown pottery. From there, I moved into other media, including acrylic, collage, watercolor, multi-media, and more.
In the early 2000s, I started focusing on experimental art, cultivating originality and applying to art shows and competitions. To my surprise, I realized I was successful in gaining recognition for my work. At that point, I expanded my activities from national to international, especially in Italy, my birth country.

Isabella, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an Italian-born artist living and working in New Jersey for decades. I am on a constant quest to improve the creativity and originality of my compositions. This way, I can offer my collectors a more sophisticated line of work that should be expected from a professional artist.
My paintings are mostly on quality, heavy-duty water-media paper as well as canvas in sizes ranging from small 10 x 10 inch works to enormous 40 x 60 inch works. My prices range from $50 to $6000, depending on the size and time committed to each piece of art.
I feel strongly that my mission is to educate other artists by giving workshops and demonstrations to amateur, beginning painters. I believe my classes can help them improve the quality of their work and, most of all, help them understand that abstract art is an expression of and elaboration of their thoughts.
My key philosophy is that art is an expression of one’s personality, and it expands and exercises your brain. I encourage everyone to explore themselves through the medium of art, and I revel in expressing my own individuality in my paintings. If you feel moved by my work, then we are communicating effectively, and you will feel the positive energy.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have survived cancer twice, and I have demonstrated to others that you can bounce back from life-threatening illness and thrive again. The cancer made me realize how beautiful life is and helped me recognize the power of a positive outlook.
I faced my own mortality and have come back happier and stronger than ever. I am energetic and enthusiastic about life. My love of beauty and joy propels me forward and powers my days and my art.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As a child, I learned that artists could be depressed and lonely. However, I found that an artist doesn’t need to suffer or experience loneliness.
My experience is that artists are generally gregarious. We have a clear understanding that long hours alone in a studio, and that time flies during a creative spell. The long hours are well accepted, but we counter that by getting together to exchange information with no sense of competition. We share openly and joyfully our time together, which allows us to energize and encourage each other in a wonderfully supportive and loving environment.
