We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Isabella Frias. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Isabella below.
Isabella, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
What I believe takes to be successful is hard work and passion for what you do. Since the first time I picked up a camera and filmed the morning announcements in 4th grade to creating my own freelance business after graduating high school, what I’ve learned is you need to love what you do, as well as work hard to get to where you want to be.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello everyone! My name is Isabella Frias, I am 22 years old and I am a freelance photographer, videographer, and editor based in Miami, Florida. I have always had an interest in photography and videography ever since I was little and continued to pursue that passion as I got older. I became apart of my high school’s film program called “Firebird TV”, where I won various awards and competed in many competitions nationwide. Once I graduated high school, I created my own business (ShotsByFrias) and became a freelancer. I was also the Boys Varsity Basketball Manager and Video Coordinator at my high school, which is where I discovered that I want to have a career in the sports industry. With that passion and knowledge in sports, I was hired in August of 2021 by the Miami HEAT as a Media Production Intern. I worked with the HEAT organization for 2 years as an intern and was able to meet many people and learn so much throughout my time there. Currently, I am still doing my freelancing and I work as a Photography/Videographer for the Athletics Department at Florida International University. My dream is to work for a professional sports organization as a photographer, videographer, and/or content producer. You can follow my Instagram, @shotsbyfrias!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I created my Instagram page for my business right after graduation high school. My first client was a friend of my older sister who was graduating from Florida International University and I leaped at the opportunity to expand my business. From there, a bunch of college graduates followed my Instagram page and asked to book their graduation shoots with me. Following that, I created my very first website and bookings page! My advice for someone starting to build a social media presence is to not be scared of posting your work. When I first started posting my work, I was discouraged when I wouldn’t have a lot of likes on my posts. But, I realized that likes and reach don’t matter; what matters is your work and putting it out for the world to see as much as possible. The more work you post, the more audience and opportunities you gain. Do not be afraid to showcase your talent and passion for what you do!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Something I believe non-creativities struggle to understand is the amount of time, hard work, and money that goes into creating and growing our personal businesses. Whether it’s hours photographing and editing pictures of a client’s shoot, to the amount of money being spent on equipment, it is definitely a hassle that not a lot of people see. People must remember that the beauty of a client’s photographs and/or footage took a lot of time, hard work, and effort to make it happen.
