Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Isabel Mazzolini. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Isabel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I ask myself this question every single day: am I happy doing what I do?
The answer is a strong yes, but I can’t lie and say that it’s always been easy.
When I first started out it was difficult to see an improvement in my quality of life – long days for little money and repeat – and that made me wonder “what if I just give up and get a regular job, have time to hangout with my friends, enjoy a nice sunny day outdoor and just live life?”
The issue with that is that I’m just not built in that way. To be able to feel happy I need constant challenge, come up with creative ideas to overcome an issue, build images that were just in my head. I realized that what I live for is to constantly being able to express myself and find new ways to put a concept, emotion, bit into visual form.
Isabel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a director of photography based in Los Angeles (CA). I started making videos at the age of thirteen, I would post music videos remake on YouTube which eventually turned into a job as videographer for web talent agencies in Milan, Italy.
I first moved to the States as an exchange student and I got to work on thesis films with my classmates. One of them was “Scooty” directed by Peter France, that was published on the Corridor Digital Youtube channel and gained a lot of attention.
I always loved creating images and I spent all the free time I had making short movies, passion projects, music videos for friends etc. until I was finally able to work in Los Angeles and I could turn all of the learning the craft into a real job.
I feel so lucky: I get to develop my skills everyday, learn more each time, I got to turn my passion into my job.
I know mostly specialize in music videos, my last upcoming work is a collaboration between Dragon Force and Meta (Facebook) in which I curated lighting and composition as director of photography. I’m looking forward to it, the amount of work my crew and I put is always at maximum and each one of my team member deserves the right amount of recognition on it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being a creative is never easy. Everything that surrounds me all the time deserves a story. I look at people living their lives and I imagine having the chance to portray what they might feel, how they are emotionally holding up. Being surrounded by people that don’t see that aspect of the surrounding I kinda frustrating sometimes, I imagine Worlds and I was told to slow down my imagination a couple of times.
When I finally got the chance to start collaborating with artists and creatives I could finally feel like we were looking at the same thing, we were imagining in the same way and I think this is really the most rewarding aspect for me, to be able to share a vision and bring it to life together.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’ve always been driven by a goal. At the very beginning I wasn’t sure what it was, I just felt like I needed to create images, videos, frames of stories to free myself from weight that I couldn’t really express.
Growing up I realized that my main goal is actually to give other people with their own complex stories the ability to be heard and understood by others, and the consequential chance for everyone else to empathize with other humans and their tales.
