We recently connected with Isabel Lopez and have shared our conversation below.
Isabel, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
My goal has always been to promote the Latino homeownership in Houston, Tx and surrounding areas. Latinos are set to make up 70% of first-time homebuyers over the next 20 years. However Latino first-time home buyers face numerous challenges compared to other groups, including low incomes, language barriers, lack of affordable housing, and lower credit scores.
I always strive to make my clients fully aware of their financial options to get their credit score in shape, afford a downpayment, and learn more about the mortgage process. Nothing is more fulfilling to me than the sense of accomplishment a Latino first -time home buyer experiences, when they close on their first home. the majority of Latinos owning a home is part of their American dream, a house is an essential place for Latinos to come together and thrive.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Isabel Lopez, I am originally from Colombia, Latin America. I moved to Texas to complete my bachelor degree in Business Administration at the Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, TX. In the year 2000, I graduated top of my class. Then following the september 11 attack, it is was not easy to find a job as an immigrant. However, Houston independent School distric (HISD) had a shortage of bilingual teachers, and they offered to get a Licence in Education the requirement was a bachelor degree and the District offered an Alternative certification program(ACP) with The University of Saint Thomas . Thru this opportunity I got my license in educationand I was very excited to work as a full time teacher with elementary children at Houston Independent School District for 10 ayears. In 2009, after my 1st daughter was born, I decided to get my license in Real Estate, because I wanted more flexibility in my schedule, and more time with my baby. So I went to the Houston community college to take the Real Estate Classes. I went as a full time agent in 2010 doing Real Estate .My main goal in Real Estate has always been to promote homeownership in my Latino Community, i have witnessed in my own life the advantages of owning a property and building equity. I love to educate my clients in the process of purchasing a property, and I make sure it is a good investment for my clients in the long term. In 2023 , I won the Five Star Professional Award this award recognizes service professionals who provide quality service to clients. Less than 1% of real Estate agents receive this award and a Blue Ribbon Panel of industry experts reviews the final list of candidates. Since 2014, I have been a Top producer with tons of repeated clients that have become raving fans.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have had to learn three different careers to get to where I am today In my Life. First, it was my degree in Business administration, second, my license in Education and third the license in Real Estate . As Steve Jobs said: ” You can’t connect the dots looking forward : you can only connect them looking backwards” I feel my bachelor in Business administration has helped me to have a foundation with business operations, it has helped me to be a better business owner , I have a business plan and a marketing strategy . Then my role as a teacher has been a key advantage, because I learned how to educate and explain the diferent steps to my clients when buying and selling a home. These two previous careers have helped me excel in my Real estate Profession, and they have added skills that have allowed me to switched careers and pivot when i have had life changes.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
There are three key elements that have helped me built my reputation : When a client meets me I know they have three questions in their mind : 1- Do I care about them ? 2- Am I am good at what I do?, and 3- Can they trust me? I carefully listen to my clients’ needs and wants, and I make adjustments to accomodate them. Client immediately realize I care about them, They know I always strive to go the extra mile, and I work hard to surpass their expectations . My business is based on mostly referrals of previous clients and I have a record of creating raving fans.
