We were lucky to catch up with Isabel Camacho recently and have shared our conversation below.
Isabel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first moment I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path was something I knew I wanted to do since I was little, but didn’t start believing in myself until after I graduated college. I grew up only knowing Spanish, so it was hard for me when I went to school when I was younger. I would watch films to escape and I fell in love with the process of filmmaking!
Isabel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Isabel, but you can call me Chavelita which I prefer. It is a nickname they call all the Isabels in Mexico and my family calls me that out of love (I think out of love haha). I am a Latina filmmaker and photographer. I love to create weird art and help others make their vision come true. In my work, I always love to have my beautiful Mexican culture somehow involved, it’s just something that is so beautiful to me.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main mission for my creative journey is to help other Latinos/as to be heard. It is harder for us in this industry and people don’t realize how talented we are. It’s a harder journey for us, but we are not going to be stopped.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is when other creatives tell me I inspire them. I am a nobody who is passionate about film, but it makes my heart so happy when people see my work and tell me that they keep creating because of me. Or when people want me to help them out or teach them. In the future, I would love to teach upcoming filmmakers or anyone who aspires to be one and help them in any way I can. To teach them cheap ways or no budget filmmaking to not stop anyone from creating because that’s what stops me at times.
