We recently connected with Isaac Bocanegra and have shared our conversation below.
Isaac, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I have been blessed to work full time as an audio engineer and music producer for the last couple of years. I went to the Recording Connection Institute, where I met my mentor, Francesco Benvenuto. He taught me everything that I know, providing me with the tools to take advantage of opportunities that were presented. I then starter an internship at Luminous Sound Studio in 2020, while also training to be a manager at Raising Canes during the same time. After a year of my internship I was offered the chance to be a freelance engineer, later being able to transition into becoming the in house engineer at the studio! One thing that would have sped up the process is actually being more patient, funny enough. There were certain situations in which I believed I was more prepared than I actually was, creating problems when things didn’t go right. Learning the art of patience, and understanding that you will get what’s due to you in time is a huge aspect of this industry.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into music in 2014 when I was a freshman in high school, starting out as a rapper. I would record myself at home and put out songs on Soundcloud, trying to live out my dream of doing something involving music. My best friend Jordan Peter (J.B.A) made beats and would send them to me so I could put music out, he also would send. beats to the other rappers in school, trekking them they could come to me to record; this was my introduction to engineering other rappers besides my self. I immediately fell in love with recording and producing songs, making it my main priority over recording my own music. After high school I attended a school called “Recording Connection” where I met my mentor, Francesco Benvenuto. I would not be where I am without the skills he taught me. I just kept working non stop day and night trying to make this dream a reality. I would take my computer with me to work and make beats during my breaks, making sure every free moment I had was put into music. Now I am the on staff engineer at Luminous Sound Studio in Dallas, TX. My main goal in life now is to just create music that feels good, songs that resonate with people and create memories. I feel like that is lost in todays music, now it is all about quantity over quality. While quantity is important, I always want to make sure that my quality is on par with everything else you hear on the radio!

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
A lot of people don’t understand that this field, really anything involving music doesn’t just happen overnight. While there are artist that do seem to blow up overnight, that is just not the case. These people have spent years making music hoping for others to listen, and while there may be that one song that blows them up, it is never just one song that led to their success. behind that success is hours of trial and error, hundreds of verses that were scrapped or re written, thousands of ideas that have been tested. No one gets into this industry and succeeds without having failed hundreds of times. This is a game of patience, understanding, and most of all, hard work and dedication. I have been doing music going on 9 years now, and I only got my huge break in year 6, when I got my internship at Luminous Sound. After a year of interning I started getting paid sessions, after almost a year after that I started working with major label clients, and it wasn’t until almost a year after that I got a song out with a Major artist. You have to be willing to put in the work for years on end, knowing that someday it will pay off.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
While I have had an absolutely blessed life, there have been not greats moments where it felt like the world was just coming down onto of me. Music has been something that has literally saved my life multiple times, and if it wasn’t for some of my favorite artists, I can honestly say that I would not be here today. If I can repay that by reaching even just one person in the world and let them know that everything will be okay, then I have succeeded in life. No one is alone, and nobody deserves to feel that way, my main goal through music is to create something that makes people feel good, makes them feel recognized in a world that tends to overlook everyone.
