We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Isaac Bar-jonah a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Isaac, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue an acting career was the first time my father asked me “ What do you want to be when you grow up?
I can’t even say I was old enough to have a full understanding of the word pursue at the time. But I can say I answered his question with “ An actor or a football player.”
I was probably around 4 or 5 when he asked me that question.
I really never had a chance to know I wanted to pursue a career in acting because I really didn’t have a choice.
In second grade I was in the g.a.t.e. Program standing for gifted and talented education. And every year the school had one night assembly and all the parents came to the assembly that was supposed to represent the school. We were the class that represented the school in that assembly. One day Ms Buckhorn called me to her desk and said “ Do you know what a play is?” I said “No” and she said “Do you know what a movie is?” I said “ Yes” and she said “Its like a movie only in real life. And this year we have to do a play and you have to be the lead.” I said “ Ok “ and then I went back to my seat.
The whole play was pretty much me doing everything. Ms Buckhorn only let kids come up to me and give me stuff and walk away during the play. She didn’t give anyone any lines, just me. From that point on I was always the lead in plays because are class was always called on to do plays. Until 5th grade and we all graduated from elementary school.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I think I answered some of this with the second half of the first question.
I was Oscar Contention in 2021 for best supporting actor in a movie called Canaan Land. I recently won best supporting actor in a movie called Lucy and The Lake Monster in a film festival in Virginia.
I care about helping people become who they were made to be and reach their full potential.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an creative is being able to create something that can inspire someone to live life to the fullest and see their full potential and make choices that better themselves and everyone around them.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Bringing hope to people that feel hopeless and bringing light to situations that seem dark.
