We recently connected with Irwin Rogers and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Irwin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I remember when I first announced the name of my company to a few people and they couldn’t really understand why I would name it that. I always felt like I wasn’t understood as it pertains to my morals and who I am which is why I named my company “Carefree Trapboys” I wanted to destigmatize what it meant to “trap” and equate it to an ‘anything it takes’ work ethic. I wanted people to get an understanding of who I truly am and what I stand for. How I choose to style myself on any given day shouldn’t deter you from wanting to work with me when my reputation for my execution speaks for itself. This is where the “Carefree” aspect came into play. I can do what I want because I am good at what I do.
Irwin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always loved music and have been recording since I was about 15 years old. After gaining years of experience and meeting others within the industry, I decided to branch out create a label and start signing talent. I started out by signing 2 producers and a local RnB singer from Charlotte NC as my first acts and began touring. Eventually I signed more acts while making adjustments to the roster here and there, keeping the roster small so that I am able to oversee each artists growth and development. My little brother brought me an artist CFTB Liik in 2021 and It wasn’t until 2022 that I signed Kingyama when I heard his music on the way to a show. Since starting in 2016 we’ve reached over 1 million streams which is something I am very proud of and intend to continue to increase that number.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I believe NFT projects that are created with the right intention are going to be beneficial in the future. Some people aren’t able to grasp their use as of now which is what I believe is hindering the growth. I think the “metaverse” needs to grow more so that they aren’t looked as a commodity.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is engaging with potential fans. I like the fact that I am able to say I have met every fan of mine. Seeing people enjoy what I create from the perspective of being an artist and not just a person they know is a surreal feeling. I wouldn’t say the attention but the reception. I love being loved. When people love you they give off a great energy that I like to use to keep going, its motivation.
