We recently connected with Irving Gil and have shared our conversation below.
Irving, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
I donate 10% of my profit to a local non-profit. They help homeless veterans and children in our area. They provide meals, hot showers, laundry facilities, food, and clothing to people in the local area. I chose them because their mission is something that I can stand behind and I know that the proceeds actually go to help veterans and kids not just the people who work there.
The matrix COC is a fantastic organization and they do a great job making our community a better place.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Irving Gil. I am a first generation Dominican-American and I am an Air Force veteran. I have an MFA in Media Design from Full Sail University.
I got into brand strategy because of Chris Do and Jose Caballer of the futur. Design is fun but brand strategy helps solve bigger problems. It helps businesses align with their customers so that they continue to do business together. I help clients find out their “why” and their brand story.
My business creates websites and identity systems for veteran-owned businesses. As a fellow veteran I know how hard it can be to talk to normal people and there being a disconnect since they don’t understand the harsh reality that is the military. We often feel alone and misunderstood. By bridging that gap, my clients increase their revenues and feel proud of the brand they have created.
I learned brand strategy from the “Brand Master Secrets” course from Stephen Houraghan. I’ve been doing it for 5 years now and I love every bit of. When doing a workshop and seeing a client get that “click” in their brain, still gives me goosebumps. It excites me when I see clients really dig into their story and getting out of the day to day that is their business. Most business owners can barely tell you what they, who they do it for, and why they do it. I help answer all those questions with them by using workshops.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I have a slight understanding of them but I don’t get how to make money selling jpegs on the internet. I get selling homes or concert tickets but not the art that I can just screenshot on my phone. It’s an interested new technology and I’m excited to see where it goes.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My biggest thing was joining my local chamber of commerce and actually participating. I wasn’t just there to hand out business cards, I was there to make friends and connections in my local community. I wanted to help people solve issues in my town and make a difference, not just make a quick buck off someone. My biggest goal was to make friends and grow my business locally. Everyone is so obsessed with social media, and it does help, but seeing people eye and getting to know them is huge.
