We were lucky to catch up with Iris Savoy recently and have shared our conversation below.

Iris , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?

If I could return, I would have started my business sooner. I started my business in July 2010. I was in the middle of selling real estate, working on the 2010 Census, and looking for a full-time job at the same time. I was laid off from a company I worked for six years.

If I started sooner, I would save my time on things that did not make me happy. Starting sooner, I would’ve had my business started before the economy crashed, wasting by being on the fence and getting distracted by other things.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’m Iris Savoy, and I own Iris Nikki Photography, based in Aquasco, Maryland. My company captures branding and concert photography.

I hate when people ask what problems do fix for my customers. I assist musical artists in capturing their concerts or assist business owners in documenting their services or products.

What sets me apart from other photographers is that I provide detailed, personalized imagery.

I am proud of still being in business after 13 years. I am proud that I found my niche during the pandemic, and I am only focusing on things that make me happy.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

I am working on my craft all time. Learn from others by taking workshops and online courses.

Have you ever had to pivot?

Covid forced me to pivot my business. I had time to elevate my work and personal schedules. I was giving my time to everyone and not to me. Not fair. I was leading to burnout. I found a photographer mentor, and over nine months, I could build the back office of my business, redesign my website, reconfigure my social media posts., and niche down my photography offerings. I stopped over volunteering my time and focused on the work that gave me happiness.
