We were lucky to catch up with Irene Eicher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Irene, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I will forever be grateful to my parents for teaching me family values and great work ethic.
Irene, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A little bit about myself! I was born and raised into the Amish community. I am the oldest girl in a family of 14 children living. 2 of my siblings passed away. There are twin brothers older than me. I learned to love to work and serve my family and community at a very young age. I got married at 17 years of age. I went from raising my siblings to raising children. No carefree teenage space of time. My husband and I had 5 sons when we were excommunicated from the Amish church. Leaving my Amish World was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. After raising my all 7 of my boys (I gave birth to another son after leaving the Amish and also adopted a nephew). I became a single mom and worked 3 jobs to support myself and also my adopted son. When I joined the work force I had little education. I went back to get my GED and from there I got my Insurance licenses. My first couple jobs were in nursing homes working as a CNA ( Nurses aid). I also became an insurance agent. Still working in the senior market. Serving seniors on another level. I also saw the need for pre planning and added guaranteed income for life products to my portfolio. So now I do consulting with people who are nearing retirement age to make sure their assets are protected and Long Term Care planning in place as well as income for life so that they do not outlive their finances. In my spare time I write books. I have written 3 books so far and plan to write another one soon. In addition to my 7 sons I have 7 daughters in law and 21 amazing and talented grandchildren. I love my life.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There are many resources available today to become an expert on almost anything you put your mind to. My passion is helping people protect what they have worked so hard for. When I worked with seniors in the nursing homes and also in the Medicare market I saw the financial devastation when they failed to plan for end of life situations and so I began to study by reading books, watching videos and webinars. I also studied online and in person. I learned a lot from people like Tom Hegna who has been with PBS. He has written many books, of which my favorite has been Pay Checks and Play Checks. I read many personal development books. I worked as hard on myself as I did at my proffession.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn is that it’s ok for a woman to have a career and to make a living for herself. I was always raised to believe a womans place is in the kitchen, sacrificing her own needs, and serving her family. I did that for most of my life and had to relearn the Truth.
