We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Inkari Walker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Inkari, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in the arts. Music has been a part of my life since childhood; I’ve listened to a variety of genres, watched musicals, and immersed myself in anything related to music for as long as I can remember.
Inkari, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is DJ INK, and I have been a DJ in the event industry for a year now. I started by playing at birthday parties, game nights, backyard parties, and banquets. I love creating a good atmosphere with my music, and I believe that my communication skills set me apart from other DJs. I understand the struggle of finding a reliable DJ, and I always show up as expected. One of the biggest challenges I face is carrying my equipment to these events, but I take pride in doing so and providing the best experience for my clients. I am grateful for the relationships I have built with my clients, and I appreciate their continued support. Soon, I will be posting some of my mixes on social media, and I hope my supporters will continue to like and share them.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most fulfilling aspect of being a DJ is using music to uplift people’s moods. As a person who loves hearing good music myself, it’s important to create a good vibe for everyone!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When I was learning how to DJ, I thought that mastering scratching was crucial, especially since I grew up listening to hip hop. However, I realized that my focus on perfecting this one technique was hindering my overall growth as a DJ. As someone who prioritizes transitions and blends, I had to let go of my obsession with scratching and not let my initial struggles in that area hold me back.
