We were lucky to catch up with Ingrid Kindred recently and have shared our conversation below.

Ingrid, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.

In February of 2009, I was laid off from my job as a Finance Manager for a non profit. After applying for over 50 jobs with no interviews or calls, I decided in July to start my own business. I had no prior experience with entrepreneurship, but I knew that I needed to do something to help secure my financial future.

After researching and watching so many videos, I launched Spa Treasures, a handcrafted skincare business. I originally started out making soap, body oil and bath salts, I now make over 32 products, and I continue to add to my product line . Starting my own business was totally out of my comfort zone at the time but it was one of the best things that I could have done for me and my family. Spa Treasures turned 13 years old on September 15, 2022.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

Hi, my name is Ingrid Kindred, and I am the owner of Spa Treasures, LLC., a handcrafted, customizable skincare line that I created in 2009. My background is in Accounting/Finance but in 2009, after being laid off, I decided to venture into the world of entrepreneurship.

Our products are handcrafted, made with simple ingredients that are good for your skin, cruelty free, sulphate, and paraben free. We use quality oils, butters, and additives, which help to moisturize, exfoliate, and enhance your skin’s natural glow. One of the things that sets us apart from other skincare companies is that we allow you to customize your products. With over 275 different fragrances (including essential oils), you can select or blend any fragrance of your choice. Our body oil, lotion, body mist, hand and foot buttah, and shower gel are all customizable products that allow you to create a signature scent, that is your very own.

In the past year, people have reached out to me asking for products to help manage acne prone or oily skin and the scaring that it causes. In 2022. I created a turmeric skincare line that helps to manage facial and body acne. This line consists of soap, facial mask and a facial serum that not only includes turmeric, but it also includes tea tree oil.

Our skincare line continues to grow, and we continue to get positive feedback from our clients.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

In 2018, my husband retired, and we relocated from the east coast to the west coast. At this time, I decided to resign from my job in the defense industry and take a chance and work my business full time as my only source of income.

I was extremely nervous about this as Spa Treasures had always been a part time business venture for me. I was worried that my long-time customers who were used to getting their products from me at local craft fairs, wouldn’t want to have their products shipped to them. I was so wrong! They were more than happy to have their products shipped. I started focusing on running a full-time online business and haven’t looked back since then.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?

Growing clientele can be extremely hard but being consistent on social media and providing an excellent product or service makes the difference. Often, word of mouth from existing customers is what sets your business apart from others. Your customers are your best marketers. Asking for reviews and getting their input on products, allows them to feel appreciated and ensures that you’re creating products that your clientele wants.
