We were lucky to catch up with Indyah Bryant recently and have shared our conversation below.
Indyah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
To be successful is completely up to personal beliefs. Success has never been about the money for me, but more about the lives that I can touch just by using a camera. For me, doing what I love and seeing how it’s positively affecting those around me is a blessing. To have clients trust me enough to share their stories and then refer me to someone else is and always will be successful in my eyes.
Indyah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up in a family that encouraged creative outlets. For me, that outlet has always been visual storytelling through photography and videography. Although I have always enjoyed both, photography has always been my number one passion. Up until I started going to college, I had always thought of my passion as just a pastime. However, after my first semester of freshman year, I learned that I could monetize my passion. As a mass communications student with a love for storytelling, I made it my mission to make sure that I experienced all forms of media. I wanted to better understand the different ways to share stories while trying to figure out what career path I wanted to take. Throughout my college career, I had internships ranging from writing for a newspaper to recording live productions and working with the video marketing team for my college. These experiences helped shape me into the creator I am today and helped me develop my brand, “Indy’s Den,” into what it is today. Since graduating, I have always made sure that my intentions were more than just creating content to put something out there. My goal for any project is to create something that will impact both the subject and the audience.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Sometimes people think creatives and artists create to make money, but honestly many of us create because of the impact we can leave on people. One of my favorite things about any project I work on is seeing my client see their vision come to life. That moment is the most rewarding because that’s just one more step they’ve taken to share their story with the world. In college, my friends and I would collaborate on projects that shared our experiences as Black women attending a predominantly White institution (PWI). By doing this, we were able to create a space for other Black women to see the beauty in their Blackness.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
A lot of my clients have been through connections and word of mouth. An example of this was mid-pandemic, I received a call from a woman who needed someone to create a wedding video for her. At that point in my career, I had never made a wedding video and clearly explained that to her. However, one of my former supervisors told her about my video capabilities, and she decided to take a chance on me. Since then, we have collaborated on multiple projects, each different than the last.
