We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Indya Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Indya , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I decided to move forward with launching my business during Covid. I was working full time and I was currently enrolled in college. While being a mother and working full time I didn’t know how I would do it all, but something told me to just go for it. I’ve always had a desire for fashion, my family owned several boutiques. I also always loved to wear unique earrings, sometimes I would take a random pair of pants and randomly cut them up to create a denim earring. I would always try to find ways to look different than everyone else. Well, covid was a rough time for us all and honestly with so much lost in the world I needed to care relax my mind and I found peace by creating. I later discovered crafting takes me away from all my worry. It relaxes me! While I was crafting my daughter Parris (10 years old at the time) would come up to me and give me ideas or just watch me, she then would ask if she could help. I let her help, and surprisingly some of her ideas were remarkable, that is when I knew my business was going to be for us both. A mommy daughter duo called, The Indya2Parris Collection #I2P We’ve been working together ever since. Sometimes she will just sit and record me so I can create instagram reels or sometimes she’ll pick out colors, either way we collaborate well. I’ve been in business for a little over a year and it has not been easy, especially because I craft every order with my hands which requires time I don’t always have, but I truly enjoy crafting so it’s been a long but exciting journey. I’ve had to figure out the best way to market my brand, Ive had to schedule time throughout my week to record content so I can market our craft. I’ve had to learn how to organize my finances (luckily I have my degree in accounting) but it was still very challenging because I did everything myself. I googled everything and if I didn’t know the answer I would find it. Today, we are standing strong and although we don’t have as many orders as we would like coming from our website, we believe we will see our designs in Target one day! Although your online sells are the best we ALWAYS do well at our vending shows. I can profit thousands In minutes. Knowing that makes me feel so good because people really love my handmade creations. #ShopI2P
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are Indya2ParrisCollection and we design unique handcrafted earrings for all. We specialize in polymer clay and wire wrapped earrings. Indya has always had a heart for big and bold jewelry so she decided to get crafty and share her unique ideas with the world. I can do customized earrings for any outfit. All I need is a picture of the outfit and I can create the perfect ear candy. I like to say “We create ART you can WEAR” We are true creatives who put our all into designing these pieces of art for our customers. I think we standout among others because we create every intricate detail of our designs. From beginning to end, our hand create it. I remember when I tried to find an earring vendor so I didn’t have to create so much, but while searching I couldn’t find anything that I liked, so I decided to continue making my own products because that’s what sets us apart.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I’m truly blessed because, my business partner is my daughter Parris. We mesh well and create together well. All of our items are “Handcrafted with a Mother’s Touch”
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a mother, wife, supervisor, and student I had to figure out how to find time for myself to be able to create my business. By staying on a consistent schedule I was able to pivot and shift the things around me so I could be a successful business owner. I realized that I created best when my toddler was sleep. I have three kids (ages 2,7 and 11) I still have to pivot and shift around our daily schedule as I am still working my 9-5 but with the help of my husband, we’ve been able to make adjustments as needed.
