We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Indu Sastri a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Indu, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I think I am happiest when iam working on a new project or creating a new piece. I love the creative process. The learning, the hard work and the time that goes into it is all worthwhile. The moment when I gain confidence to put it up on social media and I get a positive response, is really momentous for me as an artist. I like to live in the moment and don’t wonder or waste time on what if…
Indu, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Geneticist by education, accidental artist, training to be a Cinical social worker. I didnt consciously don all these hats. My love for learning I attribute to my family. I have a family of avid readers that explains my love for books. I grew up in boarding school and we were exposed to arts and crafts very early. My maternal grandparents were very creative and my mother does amazing embroidery and I think that contributed to a great extent. I work hard to train on a particular style and only put out my work when i am happy and think it’s worth putting it out on social media. I conduct artisan based markets to promote local talent. Proceeds from these exhibitions go towards local charities like food pantries. I think this is something that I am passionate about.
All my products are handmade. I draw each and every piece that you find in my store or on my page. I draw each and every card by hand. It is time consuming but I feel that there is nothing more personal than receiving a handmade card or magnet or mirror.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I know the lure of big box stores but I encourage everyone to try and shop local and shop with small businesses or local artists. Artisans put their soul into each and every piece. The beauty of each piece, hides the time, hard work and effort that go into it. Acknowledge, appreciate and encourage a local artisan. You may be helping someone do what they love while also helping them put food on their table.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when you have repeat customers. It boosts my morale and gives me that extra confidence to continue to do what I do.
