We recently connected with Indrani Desouza and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Indrani thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I took a rather large risk many years ago, right around the time when I had finished with high school. I had been fully committed to dance from a fairly young age, and there came a time when it was time to decide if I would go to a college that I was accepted into or take the risk of going full time into the arts. There was a very reputable dance school in my hometown of Toronto called the Randolph Dance Theatre, one day they had an open audition for their scholarship program so I thought why the heck not!
Well, the day I found out that I was one of the of the people chosen to receive a full scholarship with the school there was no looking back!!
It was the first step in an amazing ride of working with other stellar artists, traveling the world on tour, then finally moving into the world of Acting and becoming a teacher to pass it on to the next generation.
Indrani, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
One of the main issues that I like to assure my clients of is that we’re working together to help them achieve an acting career. I’ve personally never been a big fan of the unapproachable ‘guru’ acting teacher.
We are working together in a technique-based and artistic environment, trying to achieve the goals of the student. It can be exhausting when a class has become all about the teacher’s ego.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey has always been to hopefully work with people that are passionate about pushing themselves and making waves with their Art. Nothing great ever comes from playing it safe.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I would have to say the most rewarding thing about being a creative is getting the opportunity to take a risk and stretch yourself beyond what you ever thought you were capable of, and to do work that is satisfying to the soul.
Many jobs are only done for the purpose of sustaining your lifestyle and to pay the bills, but being lucky enough to work in the creative realm doesn’t seem to feel as much like work but more like play.
