We recently connected with Indra Rojas and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Indra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Honestly, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t doing something creative. But I think the moment it really clicked that I wanted to pursue it more seriously was back in sixth grade. I did this little art project for school, just a small drawing, but my teacher and classmates were really impressed. That was the first time I looked at something I made and thought, “Oh, I might actually be good at this.” It gave me that butterfly feeling, like when you’re about to do something exciting and it just feels right.
After that, I was totally that kid who carried a sketchpad everywhere. I wanted to try everything; fine arts, theater design, anything I could get my hands on. I didn’t know exactly what creative path I wanted to take, so I just explored as much as I could through school and into university.
Then, I came across cosplay online, and I became obsessed. I went down a rabbit hole to learn what I could about it and I remember thinking, “Wait, this combines all the things I love?” It brought back that same spark I felt in sixth grade, and I’ve been all in ever since. More than twenty years later, I’m still doing it. It has led me to amazing projects, taken me to incredible places, helped me make lifelong friends, and even introduced me to my fiancé!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been cosplaying for over 20 years now! I just fell in love with bringing characters to life through costume, especially how many different creative things I could do through it. These days, I do a bit of everything: costume design, crafting, streaming as a part-time VTuber. I’ve even had the chance to work with companies like Marvel, JoAnn Stores, Crystal Dynamics, and Secret Lair.
Some of the coolest things I’ve gotten to do include being a Lara Croft Ambassador, a Capcom Creator, and appearing on the show Heroes of Cosplay. I also used to design costumes for theme park performers at Busch Gardens Tampa, and I’ve worked with Cosplay Fabrics to help develop materials specifically for cosplayers.
What I love most, though, is the community. Whether I’m building something for a competition or just cheering people on, I’m all about creating spaces where folks can feel welcome, inspired, and supported. Cosplay has always been about sharing the joy of fandom for me, and helping others bring their ideas to life is a huge part of that!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
There have definitely been times where I felt completely lost, like I was going to have to give up or settle for a version of life that did not look anything like what I had hoped for. I have had moments where I honestly thought my dreams were slipping away, and with them, any chance of doing something meaningful in the creative world.
But even in the middle of all that chaos and uncertainty, creativity has always been the thing that pulled me through. No matter how tough things got, I could always come back to art in some form. Whether it was making something with my hands, getting lost in a story, or just finding comfort in other people’s work, creativity became my anchor.
I truly believe that when we are at our lowest, we turn to art. Whether it is music, movies, games, or stories, it gives us a way to feel, to process, and to connect. That belief is a huge part of why I keep creating. I want to be part of that support system for someone else. I want the things I make, whether it is a costume, a stream, or something simple I post online, to be a small spark of hope or joy for someone who might need it.
That is really what drives me. I want to inspire people to believe in themselves, to keep going even when things feel impossible, and to know that they are not alone. If anything I create can help someone feel a little more seen or a little more encouraged, then I know I am doing something right.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve had to unlearn is the idea that life is supposed to follow this very specific, linear path. You know the one: go to school, get a degree, land a stable job, buy a house, and everything magically falls into place. For a long time, I measured my worth against that standard, and every time I hit a detour or things didn’t go according to that plan, I felt like I was falling behind or doing something wrong.
But over the years, especially through pursuing a creative path like cosplay and content creation, I’ve come to realize that success does not look the same for everyone. In fact, some of the most fulfilling moments in my life have come from taking risks, following my passions, and letting go of what I thought I should be doing.
It has not always been easy. There have been moments of doubt and comparison, especially when I saw peers hitting those traditional milestones while I was still figuring things out. But the truth is, I’ve built a life that feels meaningful to me, one where creativity, connection, and joy matter more than checking off boxes on someone else’s timeline.
Letting go of that old idea of success has opened the door for so many amazing experiences, relationships, and opportunities I never could have imagined if I had stuck to the “plan.” Now, I try to define success by the impact I have, the people I meet, and the happiness I find along the way.
