Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Indira Ramgarib-Katwaroo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Indira thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
My journey into entrepreneurship was born out of necessity, faith, and a desire to create something meaningful.
Several years ago, I found myself at a crossroads when I learned that the job I depended on was no longer available. Like many women and mothers, my first thought was not about building a business—it was about how I was going to provide for my family. The uncertainty was frightening, and I knew I needed to find a way forward quickly.
Around that time, I was invited to attend a presentation about becoming a travel advisor. To be honest, I was hesitant. I had never envisioned myself as a business owner, and the thought of starting something from scratch felt overwhelming. However, my husband encouraged me to attend the meeting with an open mind. That decision changed the course of my life.
What started as curiosity quickly became a vision. I saw an opportunity not only to earn an income but to build a business that could create opportunities for others as well. The next few months were filled with learning. I immersed myself in understanding the travel industry, completing training programs, obtaining certifications, building supplier relationships, and learning the technology needed to serve clients professionally.
I launched my travel business with determination, but like most entrepreneurs, I quickly discovered that passion alone was not enough. I had to learn marketing, sales, customer service, business operations, and financial management. I spent countless hours building systems, creating processes, networking, and finding my first clients.
As the business grew, something unexpected happened. I realized my greatest passion was not simply booking travel—it was helping other travel professionals succeed. I saw talented agents struggling to find clients, working long hours, and feeling overwhelmed by the business side of entrepreneurship. That inspired me to expand beyond travel sales and create a platform focused on education, mentorship, marketing, and business development.
Today, through Magical Island Tours and Travel LLC, we are much more than a Host Agency and education company. We help travel professionals attract their ideal clients, build sustainable businesses, and avoid burnout through effective marketing and business strategies.
I choose to work with travel professionals because I genuinely believe they make the world a better place. Travel has the power to transform lives. It introduces people to new cultures, perspectives, and experiences. It builds understanding, creates connections, and breaks down barriers that often divide us. Every travel advisor has the ability to impact lives in ways they may never fully realize.
What truly drives me, however, is helping people achieve financial empowerment. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone gain confidence, build a successful business, create financial stability for their family, and realize possibilities they once thought were out of reach.
Looking back, there was no single moment that guaranteed success. It was a series of small decisions made consistently over time—attending that first meeting, investing in education, taking action despite uncertainty, and refusing to give up when challenges arose.
If there is one lesson I have learned, it is that sometimes your greatest opportunities arrive disguised as setbacks. Losing my job felt devastating at the time, but it ultimately led me to discover my purpose, build a thriving business, and help others create opportunities for themselves. For that, I am incredibly grateful.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Indira Ramgarib-Katwaroo, an entrepreneur, travel industry leader, author, mentor, and advocate for small business development. I am the Founder and CEO of Magical Island Tours and Travel LLC, a Host Agency and travel business development company dedicated to helping travel professionals build successful, sustainable businesses.
My journey into the travel industry was not planned. It was born out of necessity. After discovering that the job I relied upon was no longer available, I found myself searching for a new path to support my family. During that challenging period, I attended a presentation about becoming a travel advisor. With encouragement from my husband, I decided to take a chance on myself and explore an industry I knew little about at the time. What started as a way to generate income quickly became a lifelong passion and purpose.
Over the years, I immersed myself in learning every aspect of the travel business. I invested in education, certifications, industry training, supplier relationships, marketing, and business development. As my business grew, I realized that travel is about much more than booking flights and hotels. Travel changes lives. It opens minds, creates understanding between cultures, builds relationships, and helps people experience the world in ways that transform them forever.
Today, my work extends far beyond selling travel. Through Magical Island Tours and Travel LLC, I help travel advisors launch, grow, and scale their businesses through education, mentorship, marketing support, and strategic business development. I provide training programs, coaching, business resources, and access to industry opportunities that allow travel professionals to build profitable businesses while creating extraordinary experiences for their clients.
In addition to my work in travel, I am also an author. My book, *The Professional Travel Advisor*, was written to provide practical guidance and professional insights to individuals seeking success within the travel industry. My mission is to elevate the professionalism of travel advisors while equipping them with the tools necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
I am also actively involved in business and community leadership. I serve as Assistant Secretary and Director of Tourism and Events for the Greater San Fernando Area Chamber of Commerce, where I work to promote tourism, economic development, and entrepreneurship. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to supporting small businesses and helping entrepreneurs create opportunities for themselves and their communities.
The primary problem I solve for my clients is helping them bridge the gap between passion and profitability. Many travel professionals are incredibly talented but struggle with marketing, client acquisition, business systems, and growth strategies. I help them develop the skills, confidence, and structure necessary to build businesses that generate consistent income without sacrificing their quality of life.
What sets me apart is that I have personally experienced many of the challenges my clients face. I did not inherit a business or begin with extensive resources. I built my career through perseverance, continuous learning, and a willingness to adapt. Because of that experience, I understand the realities of entrepreneurship and provide practical, actionable guidance rooted in real-world experience.
What I am most proud of is not the awards, titles, or recognition I have received throughout my career. I am most proud of the lives I have impacted. Whether it is helping a family create lifelong travel memories, assisting a new travel advisor in launching their first business, mentoring an entrepreneur toward financial independence, or inspiring someone to pursue their dreams despite uncertainty, those moments are the true measure of success for me.
The message I want people to know about me and my brand is simple: opportunity changes lives. My mission is to help people create opportunities—through travel, through entrepreneurship, and through education. Everything I do is centered around empowering others to see bigger possibilities for themselves and giving them the tools and support to achieve them.
I firmly believe that travel has the power to connect people, businesses have the power to transform communities, and education has the power to change lives. My work sits at the intersection of all three, and I am grateful every day for the opportunity to make a positive impact through the businesses, organizations, and individuals I serve.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the most defining moments of resilience in my journey happened while I was building my business from a hospital bed.
For years, I struggled with serious health issues that doctors could not fully explain. I was constantly fatigued, experienced severe digestive problems, and often felt physically exhausted. At the time, I did not know that I was living with undiagnosed Celiac disease. I only knew that my body was failing me while my responsibilities continued to grow.
At my lowest point, the entire left side of my body became severely swollen. Simple tasks that most people take for granted became enormous challenges. I needed assistance to eat, swallow, walk, and perform many basic daily activities. There were moments when I questioned how I would continue, not only as a business owner but as a wife, mother, and provider. The uncertainty was overwhelming because no one could tell me exactly what was causing my condition or how long it would last.
There were periods when I was hospitalized, uncertain about what was happening to my health and worried about my future. Yet even from a hospital bed, I refused to abandon the vision I had for my life and my business. I remember working from my laptop between medical tests, answering client emails, coordinating travel arrangements, taking calls, and planning the future of my company while doctors searched for answers.
Those moments tested me in ways I never imagined. Physically, I was weak. Emotionally, I was frightened and frustrated. Mentally, I was fighting to remain hopeful while dealing with a condition that had not yet been diagnosed. Every day required determination. There were days when simply getting out of bed felt like a victory.
What carried me through was my faith, my family, and my belief that my circumstances would not have the final say in my story. Instead of focusing on what I could no longer do, I focused on what I could do. Some days that meant responding to a few emails. Other days it meant making a phone call, mentoring an agent, or developing a new business strategy. The progress was not always dramatic, but it was consistent.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with Celiac disease, finally giving me answers and a pathway toward recovery. While the diagnosis brought relief, the experience had already transformed me. It taught me perseverance when I felt weak, patience when progress seemed slow, and gratitude for every milestone, no matter how small.
Today, when people see the success of my businesses, my work as an author, mentor, and travel industry leader, they often see the accomplishments. What they do not see are the countless hours spent building a business while facing a serious health crisis. They do not see the hospital rooms, the physical pain, the uncertainty, or the moments when I had to summon strength I did not know I possessed.
That chapter of my life remains one of my greatest sources of pride—not because of the illness itself, but because I refused to let it define my future. It taught me that resilience is not about being fearless or unbreakable. It is about continuing to move forward when every obstacle tells you to stop.
If my journey has taught me anything, it is that your greatest challenges can become the foundation of your greatest purpose. Even when I needed help to eat, swallow, and walk, I continued to build. And that experience continues to remind me—and those I mentor—that our circumstances may shape us, but they do not have to limit us.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most important lessons I had to unlearn was the belief that strength means doing everything yourself.
For much of my life, I believed that if I worked harder, pushed longer, and carried more responsibility than everyone else, I would eventually achieve success. As a wife, mother, entrepreneur, community leader, and mentor, I became accustomed to being the person others could depend on. I wore that responsibility as a badge of honor.
The problem was that I rarely allowed myself to depend on anyone else.
That mindset followed me into business. In the early years, I tried to do everything myself—sales, marketing, administration, client service, accounting, training, and business development. I convinced myself that asking for help was a sign of weakness or that no one could do things as well as I could.
Then my health forced me to confront that belief.
During the years I struggled with undiagnosed Celiac disease, my body began shutting down in ways I could not ignore. At one point, the entire left side of my body became severely swollen, and I needed assistance with basic functions such as eating, swallowing, and walking. For someone who had built her identity around being independent and capable, it was a humbling experience.
I had no choice but to rely on others.
My family stepped in. Friends supported me. Clients showed patience and understanding. I learned that allowing others to help did not make me less strong—it made me human.
That experience completely changed the way I view leadership and success. I realized that true strength is not measured by how much you can carry alone. It is measured by your ability to build relationships, trust others, accept support, and create systems that allow everyone to contribute.
I also learned that success is not about sacrificing yourself to prove your dedication. For years, I believed burnout was simply the price of ambition. Today, I know that sustainable success requires balance, boundaries, and self-care.
As a mentor, this is one of the lessons I share most often with entrepreneurs. Many business owners believe they must do everything themselves to succeed. In reality, growth often begins when you learn to delegate, collaborate, and trust others with your vision.
The lesson I had to unlearn was that strength equals self-reliance. The lesson I learned instead is that strength comes from resilience, community, and the courage to ask for help when you need it.
Ironically, letting go of the need to do everything alone made me a better leader, a better entrepreneur, and a stronger person than I ever was before.
