We recently connected with Indira Cristin and have shared our conversation below.
Indira, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
The mission of my company is “inclussion”. My cakes will make that nobody feels excluded when moment to cut the cake arrives. This is the best part of any party and should be celebrated together! No matter the allergies that someone can have, religion, lifestyle or diet, a cake from bettersweet will bring not only smiles but also everyone would be able to enjoy it!!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m originally from Caracas / Venezuela. I was in the 4th year of my career of business Administration in the university when I moved to Miami in 2010. After realizing that transferring the credits to continue my studies in Miami wasn’t an option not only for economic reasons but also because it wasn’t my passion I decided to start a new life. I was trying new hobbies, activities, meeting new people in order to get to know better myself and find my real passions.
After joining crossfit I discovered my love for the kitchen. I spent a lot of time baking to create recipes to satisfy mine and my crossfit mates cravings. At this point I knew that I wanted to have my own business and it’ll be a bakery.
My first recipes were just Gluten free but after a while I noticed a pattern. In every single celebration there was always someone (a kid or an adult) that wasn’t able to eat the cake for different reasons such as: allergies to dairy, gluten, nuts, religions , lifestyles, diets or simple love to animals. This situation was not only disappointing and frustrating but also, creates an exclusion vibe because the best part of a party is actually THE CAKE!
My mission is to promote “Inclusion”. To brake up with this negative pattern I created Bettersweet Vegan Bakery that not only offers delicious cakes but also specializes in artistic designs that have been talk about lately.
I’m a proud self tough cake designer and I’m still impressing myself sometimes with some of my work.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
We are an online Vegan Bakery with a take out location. We have a website where customers can purchase cakes, cookies, cake pops and cupcakes. We offer different flavors and most trendy designs. Clients can customize their orders by indicating their allergies, request delivery service or even get a quote for a special and exclusive design.
It’s a very efficient system that worked perfectly during COVID19 in quarantine time. It’s very convenient because with just a click customers can get or send to the beloved ones a nice sweet detail.
All the payments are collected thought the website so we don’t have to manage cash.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
It’s been a long journey! I’m an immigrant with huge dreams and goals. When I started my business I had to fight obstacles such as the language barrier, different law system, limited networking but my persistency made me to overcome all of them. Later on, other problems came alone with COVID19. It was rough at first because we were making multi tier cakes for big parties and the quarantine was the end of that. I had to reinvent my products and adapt to the new reality.
I came out with an idea that became actually a big hit. I started offering mini cakes with very elaborated and custom decorations. Orders started to increase again and although these cakes were less expensive because of the size it was a little income that was allowing me to survive during the crisis.
My conviction and hard work made me resist that period. I also took advantage of the free time that I usually never had before and learned new tendencies and techniques from tutorials in youtube and instagram.
