We were lucky to catch up with Indigo Dreamers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Indigo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
While the music learning process has certainly been a technical pursuit, it has equally, if not more, been a self exploration and personal journey. Music was something we were both intrinsically drawn to from an early age and while we have very different paths of how we got to our instruments, we both agree that good teachers, a lot of practice, and a burning passion to play music with our hearts have been the essential factors in developing our craft. In addition, there are different aspects to our craft besides the live performance. We also have the songwriting aspects and the arranging, producing and recording side of things. Each of these skills were developed in their own way with different resources, but the foundation for all of them is a burning passion and exploration. With that foundation set, we learn things by doing and trial and error. We had big ideas and were persistent with achieving them. There are so many resources out there that you can really teach yourself to do anything if you have the passion and the courage to go after it.
While both of us started out being kind of shy, that was definitely something we had to overcome and is part of the personal journey and self exploration mentioned earlier. It’s not necessarily a negative thing. I think our shy nature makes us both observant, detail oriented and introspective. On the other hand we want to make sure that we have an engaging presence for our live performance because we feel we are the conduit for connecting people with our music and with each other, ultimately forming community.
Knowing what we know now, I think we could have sped up our learning process by performing regularly earlier. Live performance gets better and better with more experience. I also think focusing equally on the business side of things from the beginning is essential to learning your craft. They go hand in hand if that is what you want to do full time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At its core, Indigo Dreamers is a music duo made up of a husband and wife team Pouya Pourtahmasbi and Jamie Craig, trying to understand the human experience. We make music as a way to process the world around us. Our mission for Indigo Dreamers is to make songs for sensitive souls and create community around our art.
Indigo Dreamers formed in 2017 at the completion of our debut album ‘Lessons of Blue’. Since then we have been performing in the South Florida market from Miami to Melbourne and have been putting out different musical offerings over the years, including various singles, music videos, YouTube covers and more. We have had some big moments over the years including opening up for Shawn Mullins and Dar Williams at the Broward Center of the Performing Arts, opening up for the Counting Crows at SunFest 2022, and performing alongside renown bass player Bakithi Kumalo for Paul Simon’s Graceland album experience. In 2020 we had our YouTube cover of ‘Trampoline’ featured on Sirius XM’s the Covers Channel. We also do a lot of private events and weddings, which adds even more variety to what we do.
We have worked really hard over the last few years shaping our sound and crafting an intimate live performance and we really feel we have a unique sound that sets us apart. We are busy working on new music and creating content for our live show and social media and can’t wait to share these new things with our fans.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When your fans appreciate and fall in love with your new work that you have spent a lot of your time and mental and spiritual energy on. This creates a deep relationship between you and your fans, which in our opinion is the ultimate goal of being an artist. We love creating community around our music.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is to reflect. As an artist you open yourself up to the universe and the people around you and as a consequence you absorb that energy. Then you reflect these energies back through your art. This way others can see and feel themselves and their energy in your art. This and building community are indeed our ultimate goals.
