What sets us apart is our nuanced understanding of both community needs and corporate capabilities. We don’t just tell stories; we create lasting connections that transform one-time initiatives into sustainable partnerships. At Indigo PR, we believe that every untold story has the power to reshape perceptions, break down barriers, and create pathways for genuine progress in our ever-evolving world.
Indigo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
During my time at La Salle University, I maximized both athletic and academic opportunities as a Division 1 women’s basketball scholarship recipient. Demonstrating the same strategic thinking that would later define my PR career, I completed my BA in Communications with a focus in Public Relations in just three years, allowing me to pursue my MBA in Business and Strategic Communications during my final scholarship year. This powerful combination of athletics, communications, and advanced business education built the foundation for my future success in connecting corporate entities with underserved communities.
My journey into public relations took an unconventional path that began in Washington DC’s vibrant music scene. While booking shows and managing artist promotions in the nation’s capital, I discovered my passion for elevating unique voices and building authentic connections. When I made the bold move to Los Angeles in 2018, I knew I had to rebuild from the ground up in a city where relationships and experience are everything.
Rather than waiting for opportunities to find me, I created them under my first venture, How Tall Publicity. I began by seeking out the heartbeat of LA’s creative community – local artists pushing boundaries, small businesses with powerful stories to tell, cultural events that needed broader recognition, and innovative products waiting to be discovered. Each project, no matter how small, became a building block in understanding the intricate dance between storytelling and strategy.
What truly transformed my trajectory was my decision to immerse myself in the corporate world of entertainment and lifestyle agencies. These contracts became my real-world master class in public relations, teaching me not just the mechanics of the industry, but the art of building lasting relationships that continue to flourish today.
I had an incredible evolution, starting in industrial PR, where I represented companies like Swaddle and innovative 3D printing firms. Over time, I transitioned into the entertainment and lifestyle space, working with an amazing array of clients. I’ve had the privilege of representing iconic brands such as Pepsi’s Rockstar and Mountain Dew, the Los Angeles Auto Show, Quantum Squares, and Cirque Du Soleil. I’ve also collaborated with inspiring individuals like Angus Cloud, Vivica A. Fox, Malinda Williams, and Demetrius “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.
In addition to these clients, I’ve been honored to work with cultural staples like the Pan African Film Festival, The Black Radio Experience, and the Black Love Summit. My work has extended to lifestyle ventures such as Milk & Honey Restaurant and Niku X – DTLA, as well as impactful organizations like Valley Oaks Center for Enriched Studies and Areva Martin’s initiatives. Each project has allowed me to bridge the gap for communities in need of representation, combining strategic branding and authentic storytelling to create meaningful connections.
What sets Indigo Public Relations apart is a deep understanding of both community needs and corporate capabilities. We don’t just secure press coverage or manage social media; we create meaningful connections that transform one-time initiatives into sustainable partnerships. My proudest achievements aren’t measured in metrics but in moments – watching a small business owner’s story reach national audiences, seeing an artist’s work break into mainstream consciousness, or helping a nonprofit secure transformative funding and broadening it’s visibility.
For anyone considering working with us, know that at Indigo PR, we believe in the power of genuine representation and meaningful impact. We’re not just building brands; we’re creating pathways for voices that need to be heard and stories that need to be told. This isn’t just business for us – it’s about creating lasting change in communities that deserve greater visibility and support.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
At Indigo PR, our most meaningful client relationships bloom through authentic connections and shared passions. Every successful project becomes a testament to our values, naturally drawing in partners who resonate with our mission. This organic growth through genuine relationships and proven results has become the cornerstone of our expansion, allowing us to continually connect with individuals and organizations who are as passionate about creating lasting impact as we are.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One of the most challenging aspects for non-creatives to understand about my journey is that success in creative industries, particularly in PR and brand storytelling, isn’t always linear or traditional. When I moved to Los Angeles, I didn’t have the “right” experience on paper that many agencies look for, but I had something equally valuable – the ability to see potential connections and stories where others might not.
Many might assume that PR is just about sending emails or getting press coverage, but the real work lies in building authentic relationships and understanding the delicate art of storytelling within underserved communities. It’s about recognizing that sometimes the most powerful stories come from places that traditional media might overlook, and having the courage to start from scratch, taking on projects that others might consider too small or unconventional.
My path required trusting my instincts and being willing to start at the grassroots level with How Tall Publicity, even in a city as competitive as Los Angeles. While others might have waited for the perfect opportunity or traditional entry point, I learned that creating your own path – though it might seem risky or unconventional to non-creatives – can actually be your greatest strength. It’s about understanding that every small project, every local artist, and every community event is an opportunity to learn, grow, and build meaningful connections.
For anyone looking to break into creative industries, remember that your unique perspective and willingness to start small while thinking big can be more valuable than traditional credentials. Sometimes, the most impactful work comes from having the courage to create your own opportunities rather than waiting for them to appear.
