We recently connected with Indigo and have shared our conversation below.
Indigo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents have influenced my life in ways I can never fully repay. I was fortunate to grow up in a loving and supportive two-parent household. As a child with big dreams, often seen as impossible, I found unwavering encouragement in my parents. When I aspired to be a fashion designer, my mom bought me a notepad with design templates. When I dreamed of running in the Olympics, my dad timed me during our training sessions. When I aimed for the WNBA, my dad and brother helped me with conditioning. When I wanted to be a doctor, my parents gave me a doctor’s kit and let me assist them, even when they felt unwell. This constant support gave me the confidence to pursue any goal. As children, we seek validation from our parents first. Growing up hearing “you can do it!” has shaped my mindset and approach to everything. I owe it all to my parents!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My journey into music began back in 2018 when I took a semester off from college. I went to Patchwerk Studios in Atlanta, GA, to network and was introduced to the business side of the music industry. This experience inspired me to start my record label, now known as R1 Records. By November 2021, I officially launched the label and started building it. Despite facing numerous challenges from 2021 to 2022, such as balancing my studies, personal growth, and losing friends, I stayed focused and resilient.
In 2023, I graduated from Middle Georgia State University with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Contemporary Musicianship (Industry Track) and a minor in Information Technology. This allowed me to devote more time to developing my label. I made valuable connections with industry professionals and began forming a team. Now, in 2024, I’m thrilled to announce the signing of our first artists and the launch of my podcast, “Unheard Sessions with Indigo,” in June. This podcast will provide a platform for 2-3 independent artists to share their stories and network with others.
R1 Records is also undergoing a rebranding and launching a new website this year. We have many exciting developments ahead, and I am deeply grateful for the support during these early stages. In addition to managing a record label and podcast, I’ve ventured into professional songwriting and will announce a new collaboration soon. I’m also launching a new business outside the music and entertainment industry.
I want my supporters to know how much I appreciate their help in my entrepreneurial journey. Becoming a serial entrepreneur is a major goal of mine, and I’m thankful for everyone who contributes to my success. I’m excited for all the great things coming in 2024 and to continue growing into my higher self.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely! When I moved to Macon, GA, I was unaware of the city’s rich musical heritage. I discovered that Otis Redding was from here and learned about the Otis Redding Foundation, which continues his legacy. I also learned about the historic Douglass Theatre, named after Charles Henry Douglass. Established in 1921, it hosted early jazz and blues legends like Otis Redding, Bessie Smith, James Brown, Ma Rainey, and Little Richard, while also showing popular feature-length films and serials. Macon has a vibrant music culture, and my mission is to base my record label here and remind the city of the musical greatness it has produced. Understanding your roots is crucial, and I am committed to ensuring Macon is recognized for its significant contributions to the music industry.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to unlearn was waiting for someone else to help me start my journey. I used to habitually seek validation from those around me before taking action. I’d wait for company to attend networking events and constantly seek opinions on my business ideas. This mindset left me stagnant, stressed, and resentful when others didn’t follow through. While we’re often told not to wait on others, it only truly sinks in when it personally affects us. I wonder where I’d be if I had kept waiting. I encourage you to take that leap of faith! You don’t want to live with “what ifs” (as my mom always said). Take action now, and trust that you can make adjustments along the way. Your vision doesn’t need external validation. Start now, and trust that in divine timing, you will succeed.
