We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Imran Ahmed. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Imran below.
Hi Imran, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Taking a leap into English rock music in Pakistan was undoubtedly a risky move, one that many would have deemed unconventional or even impractical. In a country where the music scene predominantly revolved around local genres and languages, venturing into the realm of English rock felt like swimming against the current.
Yet, despite the odds stacked against me, I was determined to carve out my own path in the music industry. English rock spoke to my soul in a way that no other genre could, igniting a passion and drive that transcended geographical boundaries.
I knew the journey ahead would be fraught with challenges. Getting accepted in a music scene dominated by different sounds and languages seemed like an uphill battle. There were doubts and uncertainties, both from within and from those around me, questioning the feasibility of my ambitions.
But I refused to let fear hold me back. I saw the risk not as a deterrent, but as an opportunity to defy expectations and blaze a trail for others to follow. I poured my heart and soul into my music, honing my craft and refining my sound with unwavering determination.
With each performance, each song, I sought to break down barriers and prove that English rock had a place in Pakistan’s diverse musical landscape. And slowly but surely, my perseverance began to pay off.
Despite the initial skepticism, I found a growing audience of like-minded individuals who resonated with my music and shared my passion for English rock. Through word of mouth and grassroots support, I began to carve out a niche for myself in the industry, earning recognition and respect for staying true to my artistic vision.
Imran, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Imran Ahmed guitarist/composer/songwriter, picking up that guitar at 15 was a game-changer for me. I had no idea it was missing a string! I was exposed to rock music at an early age the American heavy metal band Megadeth and in particular the song “Set The World A Fire” flipped my world upside down, pushing me into the realm of rock. Those guitar magazines became my Bible, teaching me everything from theory to gear. Money was tight, so I hustled with private lessons to afford my first electric guitar, a Les Paul copy. Hours of practice locked away in my room paid off, and by 17, I was ready to conquer the world.
Forming Project X was a dream come true. Winning awards and collaborating with incredible musicians has been surreal. Nkounter’s birth with David Pollard was destiny; our chemistry was electric, despite the distance. Being recognized as the Best Breakthrough Artist in 2023 was a highlight, solidifying my global presence.
My music is more than just notes; it’s a message. Blending Eastern and Western influences creates a unique sound that speaks volumes. From Royal Albert Hall to your headphones, my journey has been a whirlwind, but it’s just the beginning. My music isn’t confined to a genre; it’s an expression of my soul.
In my personal life, forming bands like Garaj and Project X was about finding my voice in a world where I felt like an outsider. Music was my escape, my way of connecting with others. If my music touches just one person, it’s all worth it. PEACE! 🎸
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to connect with people on a deeply emotional level through my music. Knowing that my songs resonate with someone out there, that they might find solace, inspiration, or understanding in my lyrics or melodies, is incredibly fulfilling. It’s about creating something meaningful, something that transcends boundaries and brings people together, even if just for a moment. The impact my music has on others, whether it’s making them dance, cry, or reflect, is what fuels my passion and keeps me going as an artist. Music knows no boundaries; it speaks a universal language that transcends culture, language, and geography. It has the power to unite people from all walks of life, to evoke emotions, and to create connections that defy borders. As an artist, I believe in harnessing the transformative power of music to break down barriers and bring people together in harmony. Whether it’s through rock, blues, or Eastern classical influences, my aim is to create music that resonates with souls across the globe, reminding us that we are all interconnected through the beauty of sound.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Absolutely. There was a defining moment in my musical journey where I aimed to break into the English rock music scene. It was a realm I deeply admired, with its rich history and iconic artists shaping my own musical aspirations.
I poured my heart and soul into crafting a demo that I believed captured the essence of my vision for English rock music. With nervous excitement, I submitted it to several prominent music festivals and industry showcases, hoping for the chance to showcase my music on a larger stage.
Weeks went by without any response, and doubts crept into my mind. Was my music not good enough? Were my dreams too lofty? But rather than succumbing to despair, I chose to channel those doubts into fuel for my resilience.
I doubled down on my efforts, refining my sound, and reaching out to local venues for performance opportunities. I poured myself into my music, drawing inspiration from the very artists who had ignited my passion for English rock music.
And then, just when I least expected it, an opportunity emerged. A small, independent music festival reached out, expressing interest in featuring my band as part of their lineup. It wasn’t the grand stage I had initially envisioned, but it was a step in the right direction.
With renewed determination, I threw myself into preparations for the festival, rehearsing tirelessly and fine-tuning our setlist. When the day of the festival arrived, I stepped onto the stage with a mixture of nerves and excitement, ready to share my music with the world.
The performance was electrifying, and the audience responded with enthusiasm, cheering and dancing along to our songs. In that moment, I felt an indescribable sense of validation – not just for my music, but for the resilience and perseverance that had brought me to that stage.
From that day forward, I continued to pursue my musical dreams with unwavering determination. I sought out every opportunity to share my music and connect with audiences, knowing that each setback and challenge was simply another step on the path to success.
Looking back, that moment taught me a valuable lesson in resilience – that setbacks are not roadblocks, but detours on the journey to achieving our dreams. And with perseverance and determination, anything is possible, even breaking into the hallowed halls of English rock music in my country Pakistan.
