Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Impulse Dance. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Impulse, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
As an organization, we strive to improve our dancing skills as individuals and as a group. Our members have come from different dance backgrounds ranging from never dancing before to having years of experience. With also having all different learning styles coming together, our goal is to adhere to everyone and find both fun and efficient ways to learn choreographies. From our experience, we have learned that the best way to speed up our learning process is by having dedicated members willing to help lead others and having a welcoming motivational environment. Specifically, we have a structured learning process that continues to be improved where members learn choreography on their own and with a group, helping them practice individually and learn from others. Regarding internal structure, during the fall of 2022, we received a vast influx of members. Although we were immensely excited, the systems in place at the time were not the best for a larger group of members leading to a semester of trial and error as we worked to accommodate those who joined us. Additionally, we have people that are able to work behind the scenes to help this process work, including dance leads, media managers, secretaries, treasurers, and a president.
Impulse, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Founded in 2019, Impulse is a K-Pop dance cover group based out of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. We are a group that welcomes dancers of any experience level from beginner to advanced! We strive to improve our dance skills, have fun, and spread our love for K-Pop through our dance covers! You can find our filmed covers on any of our social media or catch us at the many live performances on campus or in Detroit! For those interested in joining, we welcome everyone regardless of skill level.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of Impulse is the sense of community that we’ve managed to create. We strive to provide a welcoming environment to all members and it has brought us closer than ever. Members are able to collaborate and work together in order to create their best work. Due to the strength of our community, members are able to have pride in their performances and the efforts they have contributed to the group.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Like any organization trying to build its social media online platform, we essentially had to start with a blank canvas and slowly build our way into having a stronger social media presence through captivating visuals. In the beginning, we came up with a specific format. For each dance cover that we post on Instagram, we use one full row of posts to countdown toward the release day of the video. This allows us to keep our audiences engaged and anticipate the uploads. We also have made efforts to be consistent in uploading content such as pictures and videos while using hashtags and topics to reach beyond our followers and showcase our talent to all. Besides Instagram and YouTube, we post videos on TikTok of our members doing dance challenges, fun games, and more to keep up with trends. This shows what Impulse is like behind the scenes as a close-knit community.
