Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Imani Washington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Imani, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I initially realized I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally when I started to recognize the significance of love. Loving myself and prioritizing the way that I feel only opened my eyes to the unhappiness I felt on the basic path I was leading down. Graphic design is something I’ve been doing as a hobby since I was about 12 years old, so once I entered the state of love I was able to see that I was happiest when I worked on my passions.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Imani Washington. I just turned 24 this April. I was born and raised in one of the most miserable cities in America according to a national magazine called Business Insider…Lancaster, California. Growing up in a boring, miserable city didn’t make me boring and miserable, it actually amplified my imagination and brought my creativity to extreme lengths. As a kid it started off with playing games such as The Sims (which I still play) and practically anything where I can be creative and see what I put together at the end. Then, once I got about 12 years old, my mom purchased a laptop of my own for me and that’s where the graphic designing began. I was always the girl people would go to for party flyers and things like that because not only was I good but I was so passionate about it that I did it for free. This provided me with so much practice to learn and grow as a creative. After high school, I started community college at Antelope Valley College (AVC) where I decided I’d study business since my ultimate goal is to run a successful business of my own. I then started producing graphic design work for my own business I launched, where I learned and grew as an entrepreneur as well. I also began to realize my passions for art as a whole. Although these were things I did for fun all my life, I realized how successful you can get from doing these things. I love to paint, cook, write music, photography, literally all things creative and the best part is that I’m actually good at them all. After 2-3 years I transferred over to California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) where I decided to focus my business education predominantly on marketing. This educated me on so many tactics to use to build a profitable business or product. Now that I’ve received my bachelors degree I’m just ready to walk across that graduation stage and to continue doing the things I love full time.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is that feeling you get after you visualize an idea from your head come to life in front of your eyes. Especially when it’s for a client and they are taken away by the design. It’s an undeniably amazing feeling.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal driving my creative journey is happiness and freedom. I want to wake up everyday and inspire the world with my thoughts and ideas. I want to tell stories through my creativity and uplift the masses without having financial constraints.
