Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Imani Dorsey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Imani, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Black Girl Blessed was born from a merging of personal passion, family legacy, and a profound desire to empower women of color. Growing up in the vibrant D.C., Maryland, and Virginia metro area, my childhood was shaped by the strong, beautiful women in my family. My great-grandmother became a muse for me, sparking a fascination with art, creativity, and the power of self-expression.
As a young girl, I reveled in drawing and hoarded even the most mundane items to repurpose them into art projects. This thirst for creativity was my safe space, a sanctuary where I could channel my imagination. Inspired by my great-grandmother’s artistic talents, I began creating my own versions of care bears in middle school, each reflecting the interests and characteristics of my mom’s friends.
High school brought an artistic challenge, and with it, a surprising request from my great-grandmother to teach her what I had learned. This unexpected moment underscored the transformative power of art as a bridge across generations. However, college life shifted my focus away from art until my junior year, when personal challenges prompted me to rediscover painting as a therapeutic outlet.
The turning point occurred during a women’s weekend event at my church when I showcased my work. Witnessing the impact of my art on display was life-changing. It not only lifted me out of a spell of depression and anxiety but also revealed a higher purpose. It was then that Black Girl Blessed was conceived, not just as a business but as a community and movement. The brand became a canvas for celebrating cultural pride, diversity, and the inherent worth of Black women.
The logic behind pursuing Black Girl Blessed was deeply rooted in the desire to fill a void. I sought to create more than just accessories; I wanted to offer expressions of identity and affirmations of beauty. The unique approach lies in the intersection of handmade artistry, cultural resonance, and a commitment to empowerment. I recognized the power of storytelling through art and saw an opportunity to craft products that resonated with women of color on a personal level.
Black Girl Blessed emerged as a response to a yearning within me and a gap in the market. It was about creating a brand that spoke to authenticity, self-love, and empowerment, encapsulating the beauty of Black women. Through this venture, I found a way to share my personal journey, connect with a community, and offer something genuinely unique in the market. It wasn’t just about selling products; it was about creating a movement that celebrated the essence and strength of Black women through the language of art.

Imani, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Greetings! I’m Imani Dorsey, the creative force behind Black Girl Blessed. My journey into the world of handmade polymer clay earrings and vibrant paint boxes is a tapestry woven with passion, cultural pride, and a commitment to empowering women of color.
My roots trace back to the dynamic D.C., Maryland, and Virginia metro area, where the strong, beautiful women in my family inspired my love for art from an early age. The seeds of creativity sown in my childhood blossomed into Black Girl Blessed, a brand that goes beyond accessories. It’s a celebration of identity, diversity, and the inherent worth of Black women.
I officially embarked on this artistic venture during a challenging period in college when painting became my therapy. The turning point occurred at a women’s weekend event at my church, where the transformative impact of my art spurred the creation of Black Girl Blessed. It’s not just a business; it’s a movement dedicated to empowering women through art, a space where cultural pride and creativity intersect.
At Black Girl Blessed, we specialize in handmade polymer clay earrings and vibrant paint boxes that transcend mere adornments. These creations are affirmations of identity, expressions of cultural pride, and tools for empowerment. The unique fusion of artistry, cultural resonance, and a commitment to empowerment sets us apart in the market.
What makes me most proud is the community we’ve built around Black Girl Blessed. Beyond the products, it’s a space where women of color connect, celebrate their beauty, and find strength. The testimonials and stories of empowerment from our customers resonate deeply with the brand’s mission.
Now, the story continues to unfold as we embark on a new chapter, expanding into teen programming with the launch of The BU Collective. This initiative represents our commitment to empowering the next generation of young women of color. Through mentorship, scholarships, workshops, and interactive experiences, we’re creating a safe space for teens to explore their identities, embrace their worth, and connect with a supportive community.

We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
Currently, Black Girl Blessed operates through Shopify, a platform that offers streamlined e-commerce solutions. While our initial experience with Wix provided ease in website building, we encountered challenges with seamless integration into social media platforms. The shift to Shopify was motivated by its user-friendly interface for bringing the shop to social media and facilitating in-person sales through its point-of-sale system.
Pros of Shopify:
1. Easier Social Media Integration: Shopify simplifies the process of connecting our shop to social media channels. This has been crucial for expanding our reach and engaging with our audience on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
2. Point-of-sale (POS) Capabilities: The point-of-sale system provided by Shopify has been instrumental in selling our products at events and in-person gatherings. It streamlines transactions and ensures a seamless experience for customers.
3. Diverse App Ecosystem: Shopify’s extensive app ecosystem allows us to integrate various tools and functionalities to enhance our online store. From marketing apps to inventory management, Shopify provides a range of options to tailor our store to our specific needs.
4. Secure and Reliable: Shopify is known for its robust security measures, ensuring a safe and secure environment for both our business and our customers. The reliability of the platform is crucial for the smooth operation of our online store.
Cons of Shopify:
1. Limited Design Freedom Without Coding: While Shopify is user-friendly, its design customization options can be somewhat limited without a knowledge of coding. This can be a drawback for those who seek highly personalized and unique website designs.
2. Transaction Fees: Shopify charges transaction fees for each sale, which can impact overall costs. However, this is common among many e-commerce platforms.
In summary, the transition to Shopify has allowed Black Girl Blessed to overcome the challenges faced with Wix, especially in terms of social media integration and in-person sales. The platform aligns well with our current needs, providing a secure and efficient online shopping experience for our customers.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Certainly! Here’s your response:
—
A significant lesson I had to unlearn on my entrepreneurial journey with Black Girl Blessed was the desire to show up perfectly on social media. Initially, there was an inclination to present a flawless image, showcasing only the polished and perfected aspects of both my art and the business. However, as time unfolded, I realized the profound impact of authenticity and vulnerability.
The turning point came when I embraced the idea that people appreciate witnessing growth and being part of the journey. Art, much like life, is a continuous evolution, and the decision to share this evolution online allowed others to accompany me on that transformative path. Black Girl Blessed became more than a brand; it became a testament to the beauty of imperfection and the courage to step into the unknown.
The realization that it’s okay to do things scared, without all the knowledge, and imperfectly has been a cornerstone of Black Girl Blessed’s ethos. This shift in perspective has had a remarkable impact on our reach and engagement. By sharing the raw and unfiltered aspects of the creative process and the challenges faced in business, we’ve cultivated a community that resonates with authenticity.
Black Girl Blessed is a reminder that success doesn’t require perfection. It’s about embracing the journey, facing uncertainties, and pushing forward despite the fear. This philosophy has not only shaped the narrative of Black Girl Blessed but has also become a source of inspiration for our audience. It’s a celebration of growth, resilience, and the understanding that the path to success is often beautifully imperfect.
