We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Iman Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Iman, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My business was born out of witnessing the failures, disappointments, and confusion of artists, producers, songwriters, and general small business owners in my immediate circle. I too, was one of those disappointed and sometimes confused artists myself at one point in time. At the age of 15, I was offered a recording and publishing contract with a major record label. Around the same time, a few of my high school friends were offered deals as well.. some of us did better than others. We knew music, but we didn’t know the business. Neither did our parents. The deals didn’t work out and I decided to stay in the music industry becoming a background and studio session singer as well as a songwriter. I built great relationships during this time that grew my business acumen; specifically the music business. Fast forward 15 years and Max Legacy was created. My business is the intersectionality of two things I love and think are important for creatives and business owners: Organization and Education. I offer services for creatives such as copyrighting, Performance rights organization set up and education, and creative guidance. For my general business owners, I offer organizational tools such as virtual assistance, event coordination, and business calendar management. I am most proud of my clients who take a leap of faith and allow Max Legacy to alleviate the pain points of their business/brand and achieve the success they desire. What I want people to resonate most with when they connect with me or my brand is the care I provide within every detail of your business. From our first discovery call to the release of the first single or grand opening of your storefront, Max Legacy will be there, taking care of the small details that create a large impact.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born and raised in Queens, NY. Honestly, New York City has inspired my musical career in so many ways and I am so appreciative that I was raised in such a magnetic city. I started my musical career as a kid doing open mics and competitions all over the city. I have performed at the famed Apollo theater and competed on The Voice, American Idol and Diddy’s Making the Band to name a few. I was offered recording deals at the young age of 15 years old and those opportunities spawned many other opportunities such as working with platinum-selling producers such as Cardiak (H.E.R., Wale, Jeremih Lil’ Wayne) Just Blaze ( Mary J Blige, Busta Rhymes, Jay Z) and Canei Finch (Rihanna, J.Cole, Yo Gotti) just to name a few. This also led to opportunities to sing background and write for artists on major labels. All these experiences shaped me into the person and musician that I am. I needed all of it!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One specific goal driving my creative journey is to provide creatives and business owners with the education and organizational tools they need to level up their brands.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I knew for sure I was going to be a major recording artist. When my recording deal fell through, I had to rethink my life. What else was I good at? I knew I wanted to be a part of the music industry in some way, so I learned how to write songs. I did a lot of free recording sessions and wrote songs for free until my songs were considered good enough for people to pay me for them. At first, I felt like a failure when I did not accomplish my initial goal of singing on stage in front of thousands of people, but in that failure, I found a new strength and a new love: songwriting.
