We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ijeoma Anozie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ijeoma, appreciate you joining us today. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
The kindest thing someone has ever done for me is sharing my business to people they love. Spreading awareness to my brand means everything to me considering the fact I do everything by myself. Support gives me the warmest feeling.
Ijeoma, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been sewing since 2012 (10 years) and fashion has always been a big part of me. After my first year of college I figured I needed to come back home with some sort of accomplishment since school didn’t give me that feeling. That’s when I realized fashion is a craft I can see myself profiting off for the rest of my life and I created my brand named Nappygrl.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Upon building my brand from the ground up , I really had to fight for it. All my family was telling me to focus on was school and to abandon my craft. I even considered it and tried it, but it didn’t help me at all. I fought back and forth with continuing and quitting a lot.
I’m glad I never gave up because my creativity and designs are blossoming and better than ever. I couldn’t ever stop designing even if I wanted to.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the traditional method of going to school to earn a career, that is not me at all. I don’t even believe in fashion school, i can never pay anyone to teach me something I can do naturally. Everything I’ve done with my brand is self made and God given talent. Natural creativity and passion, I did get help from other artists and designers but that’s about it.
