We were lucky to catch up with Igor Oleaga recently and have shared our conversation below.
Igor, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Since I was a young kid the use of writing as a form of expression came naturally to me. I used to even write rap songs for my friends and I inspired by famous urban artists which I considered my idols at the time, but it wasn’t until I grew up and became really conscious of my ability that I decided to pursue a music career as a singer song writer at the age of 22 in 2019. Surrounded by artist friends and having their genuine approval motivated me to turn my hobby into my profession.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well the first step to get into the music industry or scene is to put your work out to the public. You need to make it available for consumption or at least perform it for people to appreciate it. I had a lot of songs piled up before I decided to put out my first self-produced project which was not the best sound quality wise (I am not a sound engineer) but attracted the people that would later help me escalate until I reached the levels of production that I am currently executing now. Performing is also a big deal if you want to enter an art scene. My first presentation was at an Open Mic in October of 2020. It was the first time that the venue hosting it opened up after the pandemic. Since that day I fell in love with the feeling of performing my own music, so I organize live shows to physically promote and perform everyone of my projects. Today I have 88 released songs between the 7 projects and the singles that complete my repertory all of which can be found on digital platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and Youtube.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
At the very beginning I started to write songs purely for self satisfaction. As I became more serious about my craft and started presenting myself at places I noticed that people really connected and saw themselves in my lyrics. My mission is to positively influence my audience. I wish to let them know that they are better off being themselves and moving around with a love mentality. Another goal is to provide for my loved ones, of course, so I pray I become very successful because they would become so as well.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is to be able to express through my craft. It feels like weight off my shoulders and heart when I write down or sing something that I have been holding inside of me. Another very rewarding aspect is when people express recognition and support towards my art. I am lucky to receive compliments on my lyrics, style and development and it serves as fuel to continue working hard to get better.
