We recently connected with Ignacio Arreola-Vidal and have shared our conversation below.
Ignacio, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
To complete something efficiently – that’s how I would define success. However, to truly be successful, you also need to be satisfied with the result. From that point on, it’s up to each individual to decide if they are successful or not. This involves managing expectations, setting and achieving goals, and dealing with self-doubt and discouragement. Many people may tell you that you are mediocre in your field. I, too, have been told many times that I am mediocre and have a mediocre work ethic. But success also involves admitting when you’ve made a mistake and correcting it to the best of your abilities. Success requires objective honesty.
Success can come in small packages; it doesn’t have to be something epic. At the risk of sounding like a walking cliché, small goals are a great way to get used to success and, by consequence, to become successful. Personally, I try to learn a new filmmaking technique every month. I then successfully apply my new knowledge to every project I work on.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Ignacio, a seasoned Director of Photography with eight years of experience in the industry. Born and raised in Mexico, I am proficient in English, Spanish, and Italian, which has enabled me to work on a diverse array of projects with multicultural teams.
Currently residing in San Antonio, TX. Over the years, I have refined my skills and developed a discerning eye for detail, lighting, and composition.
My portfolio spans various genres including feature films, television shows, commercials, and music videos. Each project brings its own unique challenges and I relish the opportunity to collaborate with directors and production teams to translate their vision onto the screen.
My approach to cinematography is centered around visual storytelling that captivates and engages audiences. I aim to evoke emotions and enhance the narrative through carefully planned and executed shots that achieve the desired aesthetic and mood.
Having worked in diverse conditions – be it on location shoots, working within limited resources, or handling unexpected challenges on set – I have developed the ability to adapt swiftly. I believe in fostering a positive and productive work environment and consider myself a team player.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
It’s not that my brain works differently. Like everything, it requires discipline, training, study, and constant learning. The desire to grow in whatever you do, whether it’s artistic or not, can be transformed into an art form
Any advice for managing a team?
Nobody will work on your project harder than you. However, if people see the determination in your eyes and how hard you work, they will join you.
