We were lucky to catch up with Iesshia Thomas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Iesshia, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The mission behind my photography business is to show the beauty of the world and the people surrounding us on a daily basis hoping to bring a different perspective. Also, I have a podcast called Authentically Speaking and I am able to shed light on different topics; for instance, motherhood, entrepreneurship, relationships, and more. I would love to spread awareness and create understanding through my experiences , as well as, others. I believe my story/experiences or thoughts will be able to help others who may be going through similar situations.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi my name is Iesshia and I am an multi talented entrepreneur. I have a photography business, IThomas Visuals, that focuses on portraits, creative shoots, family shoots, and business branding. I started my photography business because I’ve always love capturing moments whether it’s on a phone or a camera. With photography, it is easy to run into problems either with clients expectations or equipment. The best way I’ve learned to solve any problems, is to prepare ahead of time; therefore, for each shoot, I will have a consultation meeting with my clients beforehand to discuss their vision to ensure they receive the best service. With building a company or brand, it can be difficult, so I am most proud of my growth and the knowledge I have gain. On the other hand, I have recently stated a podcast, Authentically Speaking, hoping to educate others, through my experiences and others experiences, about motherhood, entrepreneurship, relationships, and more.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’ve heard many times that as an entrepreneur, you will have to lose sleep to become successful. Although I don’t 100% disagree with that statement, I ‘ve learned to understand that at moments you will lose sleep but prioritising your health, sleep included, is essential for your mentality. You can’t grow if you’re drained, mentally nor physically. When I first started my business, I listened to that phrase and I felt so drained which caused me to procrastinate because I couldn’t focus but now I am able to get more done because I prioritise my health.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Starting a business can be scary, mostly due to the thoughts of income and fear of not getting clients to be able to get paid. The way I was able to fund my business, even with 0 clients, was through my 9-5 job. Although I didn’t want to work a 9-5 job, I needed income and I had 0 clients. Saving was the key to funding my business no matter how long it took, I set a goal and stuck to it.
