We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Idit Sharoni a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Idit, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Yes, there definitely was a defining moment. It was during a session with a couple in the aftermath of infidelity. It was their second session and only one of them showed up – the one who had an affair. I asked him “where is your wife?” and he replied “She didn’t want to come”. “Why?’ I asked him and he said the following “Because you said you don’t have a roadmap to healing after infidelity and she wants someone with a roadmap”. She never came back and I ended up working with him only. But the lesson I learned would change everything about how I do my work with couples. I realized couples who are struggling in their relationships need a roadmap. They need structure, assessment and most of all they need tools to transform their connection. I specifically learned that couples in the aftermath of infidelity are often treated wrongly by therapists who don’t have a roadmap and are quick to bypass the infidelity and work on the marriage instead.
Today, in my practice all of our experts are trained with the best research based methods and follow our specific protocol that is adjusted to each case specifically. Thankfully, we have been very successful helping hundreds of couples save their relationships over the years.
Idit, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a relationship expert who is a licensed marriage and family therapist. I started out working for a private practice in south Florida and when I got fully licensed, I opened my own boutique practice specializing in relationship issues, marriage counseling, and couples therapy. My practice grew and we currently are a group of relationship experts offering couples counseling in Florida, but also affair recovery coaching programs to couples all over the globe. Some of our clients are couples who experience difficulties connecting and communicating. We help them transform their communication at first, and then we go deeper into the underlying issues.
Many of our clients come to us in the aftermath of infidelity. We offer programs that include therapy or coaching according to our roadmap to healing after infidelity.
Some of our couples deal with other issues like intimacy, lack of desire, consideration of divorce or separation, and other relationship related issues.
Lastly, we also offer Premarital Counseling to those who want tools to make sure their relationship stays healthy for the long run.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Not long ago, I wrote an article for my blog about what makes a therapist a relationship expert. If I had to choose one of the components I mention there, it would be approach. I think your approach to a case, how you conceptualize it, and how you carefully design your treatment accordingly is one of the most important ability a couples therapist needs to succeed in our field. Unfortunately, I see too often that this is not the case. Therapists don’t always know how to handle couples and often get stuck on their on the surface issues like their arguments, their character, their diagnosis, etc. And so, they offer first order solutions that simply don’t last or don’t even solve the issue. A good relationship expert is going to see the same on-the-surface behaviors, but will know how to learn patterns and offer true solutions.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I would say that we make sure to connect with our clients before they become clients. We offer free consultations not to pitch our services, but to connect, learn, and give information to make sure we are the best professionals to help your specific case.
