Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Idara Tom. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Idara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Growing up, I’ve always been fascinated by the power of creativity and self-expression; but the turning point came when I was in high school.
I still remember the thrill of watching tutorials online and the excitement of experimentation.
While taking art classes, I honed my skills and participated in local art competitions organized in collaboration with my school.
My parents’ support and my personal determination solidified my resolve to make arts my career.

Idara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Nigerian based visual artist from Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria.
Graduated with a B.A in Fine arts, from university of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
I see myself as a communicator of values conveying varieties of experiences where human forms, stories of human experiences and natural elements become parts of my compositions.
My creative process is a blend of observation, imagination, and improvisation and I constantly draw inspiration from nature, cultural roots, personal experiences, as well as everyday life.
My aim is to create works that speak to my viewers; something they can resonate with. I want my art to convey a variety of experiences and the many elements that defines our existence.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Unlocking the potential of young creatives requires more than just talent. It demands financial support, guidance, and resources… To bridge this gap, the society can:
1. Establish mentorship programs with industry experts.
2. Create online resources and workshops on business skills and financial management.
3. Develop grant programs and crowdfunding platforms.
4. Host events, conferences, and networking opportunities.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The driving force for my creative journey includes:
1. Creating interactive and participatory art that resonates with my viewers
2. Exploring identity, self-expression, and authenticity.
3. Sharing personal / shared narratives and experiences.
4. Celebrating diversity and inclusivity.
5. Promoting self awareness; resilience, strength and adaptability through life’s challenges.

For me, the most rewarding aspect
of being an artist first of all, is the personal fulfillment and joy that I experience.
Followed by the ability to bring ideas to life, evoking emotions and connections with others, pushing boundaries and challenging norms, as well as creating a sense of identity and belonging.

I quickly had to unlearn the idea that my art has to appeal to everyone regardless of their taste, culture or background.
This idea stemmed from:
1. Fear of rejection
2. Pressure to conform to popular trends
3. And the desire for recognition
However, I eventually realized that:
1. Art is subjective, therefore people have unique preferences.
2. Authenticity trumps broad appeal; hence, I learned to stay true to my vision.
3. Niche audiences exist, so I focus on those who genuinely connect with my art.
