We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Idania Hernandez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Idania, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Today I can make a living from music through my weekly performances in different restaurants and events around the entire metroplex. This has been the result of my work for 6 years. Making myself known and giving my best in each presentation. Thus creating an audience that knows me and values my talent. Thanks to all of this I was able to create my own music company in June 2021. Perhaps if I had been communicative and exposed my work more, the path to getting to know me would have been faster and I would have obtained results in less time.
Idania, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started music at the age of 6 at a childrens group in Cuba called Ismaelillo. Then studied in music schools different instruments such as piano, flute, percussion and singing. Winning national competitions in the last two. December 2016, I arrived to the United States, specifically in Dallas-Texas, I continued my musical career, making my way as a singer and musician. In my shows you can appreciate the great musical variety of genres and instruments that I perform with a mastery on the scene and charisma that catches the public, thus differentiating from other artists due to the great versatility and quality.
I am also a music educator, arranger and musical composer.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Well, in my opinion, what society could do to support artists is to give us more opportunities to present our shows, and to further value live music. For our work to be better paid because it requires a lot of effort, preparation and daily study. That we be given more promotion for our work on social networks and on the radio, television shows, interviews in the local media throughout the metroplex.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part an artist can have is the respect of her audience, that with your music and interpretation you reach the feelings of the people who listen. The ability to convey emotions with your music. For your work to be known and have the value and quality of your talent recognized.
