We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ibou Ndoye a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ibou, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew I wanted to be an artist since I was a kid because I’m from a creative family my mother was a seamstress, my grandmother tie-dye artist, and all my cousins are into textile design, and some of them are into visual art
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Ibou Ndoye. I have been an artist since I was a child, creating has always been a part of my life. as far as I can remember,
I used to create my own toys, to dye my own T-shirts I even created leather bags because my mother has made me believe that creative hands have eyes and whenever I stop creating, it means my hands are blind.
What has made me proud in my creative process is that I have succeeded in creating a style of glass painting in my country Senegal,
The concept is called broken glass painting which consists of layering several pieces of broken glass, which is the reflection of community or society, because we have all once in our lifetime has broken hopes, broken dreams, broken promises, broken friendship, and broken family in spite of all these, we try to put our self together and be strong..
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative person, is that you are never bored and you don’t need anybody to entertain you, more than that you can live everywhere you go , connect with people and share your knowledge with your community. The world of art is an extended inclusive universe somewhere on earth , but to be included in it you have to bring your contribution to the development of humanity.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission has always been art for everybody and everywhere in the world., not only art is therapeutic but it brings beauty and peace for people.
That is the reason why I do workshops everywhere here in New York, and New Jersey, in the homeless shelters,, adult centers,, libraries, schools, and universities that will help people to learn from another culture, which is African culture and that will make them understand that we are all one, despite our cultural differences.
